oops sorry dont know how i managed to post that again.

 

Looked very similar to fungus developing on a beech near me at the moment - that i have seen grifola at the base before (later in the year in 'adult' form).... incidently currently standing stony dead in a high traffic location at a wedding venue.

You saw grifola on beech? I would bet it was the polypore umbelatus, easy mis ident, cool find too.
