I have a mercedes 814 plated for 7.5 tonnes on an ordinary driving licence (at least for an old codger like me) 2nd Merc I have had 1st one was 26 year old when we finally got rid of it but transferred the body to the newer merc.

I also have a Merc 814D, my fourth. Its the light chassis version with the little bonnet, they now call them Vario's. Absolutely the best 7.5 tonner you can buy, as its small and nippy enough to use as a pickup, and does nearly 30mpg.

Just received my CLA mag so can answer my own question. According to the CLA if you passed your test prior to 1997 and have not been banned or disqualified then you retain "grandfather rights" to drive and tow vehicles up to 8250 kg gross combination weight.

Post 1997 just dont go there
