3 strand climbing rope

i was wondering if 3 strand climbing rope is still used by anyone? i started off with nylon, and have seen the poly dacron ropes advertised in the US.

i use it but only for lanyards.

 

i first made a 5m lanyard from nylon when i was at college because i was short of cash, cost me about £2.50 for the rope and i spliced both ends:biggrin:

it worked great and i still use it now.

 

i wouldn't want to climb on nylon any longer than 10m because of the stretch.

Depends what suits you, not whether its still used or not. I like it personally its what I learnt on, has stiffer properties than the modern and takes some work to coil to avoid twists and kinks. Much better than the multi-plait (stretchy boingy mare to splice stuff) but modern cordage is the way forward what with todays mechanical devices. Like Pete I still use it for lanyards and have even made a few split tails with it.

i have seen samson 3 strand on the net, but i'm not sure if its available in the uk and if its ce rated. its not nylon, so not too stretchy. i prefer my hitches on 3 strand- a bit more practice needed on the 'new' rope!
