Saw this Old Robur whilst driving back from the Blue Bells today and felt sad.

 

Then saw the whipper snapper planted alongside; and felt a liitle less pessimistic

Came across this whilst at the Forest Research Station at Alice Holt yesterday,

what greets you as you come up to the Lodge is this once fine old Oak.

 

The replacement next to it is it's own progeny

 

Great to see this level of management, Tree & Property heritage should always have a place together.

 

Was having a butchers in the Library and came across this old photo showing the old Oak still alive. Not sure when that was taken.

Looks like the original tree might have suffered some root damage from the drive - possibly explaining it's sorry state in the old aerial picture. The other trees in the foreground look healthy enough - did you notice if they're still there?

I have an Oak tree about 800 years old and i raised acorns from her grew on the saplings in my garden and last year they went out in the park. An old lady in the village is growing more for me:thumbup1:

The road might or might not have set it on the coil of decline (if that's the correct phrase), either way it didn't give up easily - It looks like it must have been a monster in about 1820...
