yeah that was about the long and short of it. their website advertised for anyone hard working and dedicated regardless of qualifications and skills to get in touch as they are always looking to expand etc. so I sent an email and got a phone call within half an hour from the MD

little bit to add to this now

bloke B has it seems got about 14 years experience under his belt, but his business is trees and gardens, not just trees, which is a negative for me in some respects, but if he's looking to keep more on the ground in the future, then could be a blessing. I shall have to go meet the chap. It also would seem he tends to regularly work 'with' another local tree company. Now, this partly shouts to me that neither one of them has enough work individually, but could just be that they are both one man bands or very small outfits.

so really im no clearer

For what it is worth Jim - I have just started working with a smaller firm - just 2 of us and a subbie and I am progressing and doing much more now than I have in the last two years!!

My last firm was only five employees all ticketed all wanting to climb but no one with more than five years exp. - working with the new firm they have more experience and have taught me more about doing quality work & trees than I ever learnt just hacking at trees on large council contracts.

The choice is yours - tryout with both but don't get overly enamoured by the lure of tickets and equipment. Knowing your trade counts for a lot.

Before I started my new job I was in a similar position and looking at working for a larger Utility firm - better pay, better equipment and probably more "training" (tickets) but I wouldn't swap now and am very thankful that I didn't take the role.
