That tree should have been removed before work commenced anyway - not sure that tree protective fencing would benefit a tree that should be removed anyway?

I would be straight onto the LA Planning Dept and get a stop notice slapped on those developers straight away

 

Not in line with BS5837 and the lack of removal of that tree makes me wonder if a tree survey, protection plan etc has even been done!!

I have recommended felling asap but have also offered to do a valuation assessment so the owners can seek some compensation/reimbursement.

 

I am familiar with the Heliwell system but gather that CAVAT gives a better monetary value. I have never used it though - anyone know if it is easy enough to use? I am hoping to do the course later this year but that'll be too late for this job.

Dont know about either system to any great extent. CAVAT however , is designed for trees in the public domain/ownership. The value is there to reflect the tree/s contribution/value in terms of public capital asset....see here for more info....

I would take the view that the system framework chosen should best reflect the subject criteria. I guess you know that and so are asking about CAVAT....

CAVAT is easily to get to grips with than Helliwell. The training is useful but I'd say that a knowledgable chap like yourself should find the guidance notes easy enough. Basically you start with a price based on an extrapolated £ per unit of girth. Everything after that is modifiers.

 

I've just used it to put a cost on some root damage in terms of life span and loss of amenity. Value before - Value after = Depreciation of asset. Won't break the bank of the guilty party but certainly motivates the money men. (Especially if they see solicitors rubbing their hands together, some things are universal.) Any cost in this climate is worth avoiding. Factor in the cost of appropriate protection and you can show that its definatley worth doing it properly.

 

That said - you need to pick your fights. That cat C sycamore in the corner ain't worth it mate. Ain't worth it.

I actually see that kind of thing a lot less than I used to in the past, those considerate builder schemes seem to work, although not in the above case.
