woodland condition survey

Got a woodland condition survey and managment report to do at the weekend, does anyone have a standard format/example for these?

 

whats standard inclusion for these?

 

is there a guidline standard?

 

as this is my first one, wanna be sure i do a pucka job!

woodland condition survey? whats that about then?

 

I have done several woodland management plans, but not come across a condition survey

 

FC have a load of the standard format examples for their mgmt plans on their website, in the grants section, but you really need to know what to put in them, including everything from protected species, archeological info, the owners management objectives, all planned management operations need to be included, are you getting a FC management planning grant for doing the work?

Ive seen a few examples of woodland condition surveys online but i think that what I have to do is really more to do with assesment and condition of the stock, woodland condition survey seems to be more akin to include soils geology and even lesser plants, habitat type etc

Arghhh!!! Haven't had to do one of these since my Tec Cert!!! A lot depnds on what the client is actually asking you for.

 

One thing you might try to include is zoning the woodland depending on the adjacent hazards and depth / time scale of inpections. Eg, trees bordering a road or footway will need a more frequent and thorough inspection than trees in the heart of the woodland.

 

Sorry, I wish I had a handy template to send you, but I don't (I'd be using it myself if I did!!!).

well, i think the title woodland CONDITION survey is the issue that confuses the brief, as it says simply as well as the condition survey include a managment plan for a ten year schedule.

 

so im thinking they dont want all the ecology, simply the hazard and vitality, usual stuff, but there is potential with the condition title to imply so much more, its not exactly clear in the brief so hence my concerns!

 

i dont want to do a basic survey if what they want is also ecology geology and all the rest of it!

Hama, if it's the first one you've done, and you're wanting to do a top job, I'd suggest getting back in touch with the client and making absolutely certain what they want.

 

If they are just wanting a risk assessment with pruning/felling options they won't be wanting anything extra. If you supply it and they haven't asked for it they might just find the extra information distracting. I've had a lot of clients come to me because they are fed up with being supplied fat reports filled with information they didn't ask for.

 

However, if they are wanting a more detailed survey inluding extraction routes, NVC types, mensuration info etc., then they'll be disappointed if you don't deliver.

 

A quick e-mail usually sorts out this kind of question.

If its just a basic management plan you're doing then the Woodland Trust do some good ones.
