you want a supplier for the midlands dont you Paul?

got a good one down here that might do a bulk shipment?

That's right Tony. Have you got a contact number or web address for your local supplier. I need about 23 cubic metres.

What do you guys look for in a 'good' organic mulch as opposed to standard bark chips etc?

then i would want some really nice old chip from deciduos and from that old dark patch right at the back of the chip pile, with that as a base, some minerals added and then a skim on top of courser chip (slow breakdown) A half kilo of lobworms and its good to go!

maybe a compost tea too!

hamadryad, are you talking about air-spades and mulching ?

also what could one do with a urban tree, where the concrete/tarmac is right up against the trunk. in Australia, urban trees have metal grids around them and have a pipe to irrigate the roots past the top layer of soil.

is this good practice ?

A perferated tube for getting water down to the roots is a good idea, as for metal grid over root plates, well often they are not well designed nor maintained or checked over time. Ive seen too many that have been left too long and been the cause of felling rather than the prevention of damages!

tarmac right up to the tree is a difficult situation to do anything for the rhizosphere, maybe andrew has a few tips here, or lee for that matter, this is thier bag:thumbup1:
