making up a lanyard

I'm agreeing with marc, that sounds good and simple.

 

The point i hopefully made was that i've seen climbers come to us with all the metalware, the latest this, that and the other but not be able to produce the goods when required.

 

After 5 years i'm happy running a blakes, it gets me down plenty fast and only jams when i stop abruptly on it. I may try a VT again one day, with marcs half hitch at the bottom.

Yeah, I meant rope fliplines are good because you can use them for supp. anchoring. Wire are nice on chogging down messy stems, but i'd rather 2 rope lines on clean stems (mainline converted to strop and short rope strop).

I use that method, then use my wire strop when im on the main stem with no anchor points. My strop is 3mtrs and if i need anymore than that i just use the other end of my climbing line. Gets a bit messy when have a strop,just gets in the way.

thought I'd have a little experiment with some knots for my lanyard setup. tried, prusik, tried VT (all leant back roped to my bedroom doorhandle).

 

prusik seemed to deform and lock up too much, also didnt allow me to run my pulley how i wanted it for single handed adjustment, VT wouldnt grab hard enough, though I suspect it could have been something I was doing wrong but either way, it was out of the running for now.

 

Then moved onto a Klemheist. Hadnt tried this knot before but Im really happy with its performance. I tied it with a loose piece of rope in a bight rather than a loop, and then tied double fishermans' placed to set the legs the desired length. Doing it this way I was able to put the pulley between the legs and it advances, grips and lets out like a dream.

 

I do feel it would be even further improved by using an eye to eye cord and an oval biner.

 

I havent climbed on this yet so please give your opinions and suggestions. I'm here to learn!

I used to climb with a klemheist on my main line, used to work better than a prussic of blakes for me. didn't seem to lock up on me as easy as the other two. I have always used a vt on my side/positioning strop with pulley. IMO you cannot beat it, easy to tie and adjust with the one hand. You said the VT wouldn't grab for you. Did you have it tied tight enough? try again with either a shorter piece of rope or put in an extra wrap so the knot is set correctly. I think you may find it worth while...:wave:

 

Good luck with whatever you decide, remember the main thing is to be comfortable with whichever climbing system and knot you use. and master them on the ground before you start climbing.

I should also add that I did the klemheist as above from the tree climbers companion and liked it, but I could get it to slip a little as I put weight onto it. I found that doing it with the extra wrap as per the animated knots site made it even better!

Tried the VT again with shorter legs and the 4 wrap, 3 braid version works brilliantly. I certainly dont want to even try using it as a main climbing hitch for a long while, but I have to say, as a lanyard adjuster, it seems pretty easy to me! and seems to stay how it should be more than the normal prusik.

 

Only advantage I've felt over the klemheist in this very limited testing is it is easier to advance (as if it's not there) and very soft to release.

The VT in the pic has a half hitch after the last braid similar to a knute it makes it a little smoother and consistent.

symetrical biners are good for lanyards as they are narrower and don't dig into your side, plus less chance of side loading. At the end of the day any compact biner is o.k.

 

Marc, if you have the chance could you get a close up of that VT variation. Sounds very interesting. I use a Knut for my lanyard and a VT form my climbing line, I like the knut better but it seems to wear the cord faster so i switched.

I don't use that knot in the pic I posted. I have tried it and it is well worth giving a go.

One of the main reasons I tried the half hitch at the bottom of a VT was I heard it can help prevent rope twist which happens when using a VT on certain rope.
