stump treatment next to watercourses

Hi,

Does anyone ever do any stump treatment near watercourses?

If so do you apply for the correct environment agency consent to carry out the work?

Our local EA office is sticking firmly to the person doing the application having to have PA6AW for hand held application of pesticides next to / on a watercourse, otherwise they wont grant the consent (they want proof first). This is a bit annoying to say the least although im seriously considering doing it as i dont have PA6 aleady (luckily else i would need to be re-assessed for the AW element anyway)

So whats everyone elses take on this? where people even aware that this level of bureauacy existed relating to stump treatments in this situation.

I'm starting to think sometimes its just easier to get on and do, rather that ask the questions  I try and be as environmentally aware and stay the right side of the legislation, but i have to say this is a bit petty, i mean i have PA1 and 2, and i bet if i do PA6AW it will all be about knapsac sprayers which i have no interest in using as i have a sprayer on my quad and is covered by my other tickets. Anyway im starting to ramble

thoughts please.............

Depends on the chemical, there is a list I have seen that is approved by the EA and MAFF, but along time since and no memory of it.

Rock salt? ok for medium/large stumps, and not spraying

PA6 is knapsack application as you deducted. If non strayed application I presume just PA1 would be sufficient?

think its basically glyphosate and not much else

apparently not as PA1 doesnt deal specifically with watercourses, what get me is there is a PA6CW which is granular pesticide application to a watercourse, sure these could be combined?

I have stump treated a good deal although it has been sometime since the last application ( 4-5 yrs ) Most all the treating was on or near a watercourse. As far as the conservation organisations are concerned, glyphosate seeems to be the poison of choice. I hope this helps. I am not aware of the level of meddling that you refer to in your comments...sorry.

B y meddling I mean beaurocracy!!

PA6AW is for "hydraulic nozzle and rotary atomiser applicators" in or near water, rather than hand applicators near water in general. That implies that if you used another type of applicator..eg paint brush, drench gun, you may not need the AW option. Anyone with PA6A would be covered for PA6D - "hand held applicators requiring minimal calibration" - which would include brushes, etc.

Also, how near are the stumps to the water? I seem to remember that "in or near" means within 1m of the watercourse.
