Hedgehogs being nocturnal, sleep during the day and if they are out in the daytime it is usually a sign that something is wrong with them. It could have been poisoned (slug pellets in gardens are a huge danger to hedgehogs and can kill them), been injured or just cold and hungry. It could also be a young orphaned one, not knowing how to fend for itself.
