Expensive fencing?

You'll want the posts pressure treated, (there is a British Standard but can't remember it). Make sure the posts are 125x100mm. the extra 25mm makes a huge amount of difference to the longevity and strength. Ensure the posts are 600mm into the ground and the holes have good straight sides. There should be centre stumps to support the gravel boards.

I think its like any trade, you should get what you pay for, you just have to make sure you let them know that their price is the dearest and you expect a quality job at that price

I never go with the cheapest quote because you always find they are either rushing to make the job pay or using substandard matierials, in the end its false economy

Totally agree Dean, thing is I didn't get quotes. I try where possible to use only people that have been recommended to me or if Ive seen their works.

I know the guy is good and reliable but just didn't know if the price was high so thought I would run it buy some members hear, as sum seem to do fair bit of fencing. Will have a word with him and see if he will sharpen the pencil just a wee bit.

tanalizing and pressure treating is exactly the same thing,if anyone tells you different they are wrong :001_smile:

The process is exactly the same. Just depends what they use to treat it as to whether its tanalizing or just pressure treating.:thumbup1:

Looks like me and you finally agree on something Sam:thumbup1: Knew it would happen sooner or later.

it had to happen sooner or later....:001_smile:

i was a manager of a timber yard where we had a treatment tank

Am I right in thinking that treating with tanalith is tanalizing and treating with anything else is just pressure treating, but the process is the same?

Either way lets hope it penetrates deeper than this pile of rubbish I broke today, going to get a new rail tomorrow morning.

This has just about penetrated the surface and it's the comercial stuff too

What you moaning about, you have a least 1mm fully treated there.

It is pretty poor isn't it.

the spec can make the price vary dramatically, whether the bays are 1.8, 2.4 or 3m lengths, how many arris rails are being fitted per bay? Is the feather edge counter battened and capped?? additional mortising on the posts always adds costs.

To me the price seems high but every area seems to have different rates
