which generator?

Hi everyone,

I'm considering buying a generator to power my angle grinder for sanding, also a black and decker powerfile. However, I get quite confused when it comes to electricity: watts, amps and volts are a mystery to me!

I have used my boss's genny at work, it's a cheap chinese one I don't know the specs but it's quite small. It managed to power my grinder, but wouldn't even start the powerfile. Can anyone advise me what key figures to look for in a genny please? It will only be powering one at a time, not both together.

Here's links to the exact kit I want to power off it, if it means anything...

Angle Grinder:

Sealey SG125 - Angle Grinder 125mm 1000W/230V --- Sealey & Draper Tools - Classic-Car-World Tool Shop

Powerfile:

Black & Decker Cyclonic Action Powerfile KA900E 350W, KA900E

cheers,

Joe

Your start up loads for the 1000w angle grinder will be quite high (could be as high as 4-5 times the rated amount). A good make 2000w job might work yet a cheap one might not.

Not sure why the file dint work when a load 3 times higher did.

Oh & most gennies are rated in KVA so a 2KVA is not the same as 2kw (well it is if the load is the right sort but yours is not) de rate the KVA by about 70% to get a "real" wattage for tools.
