bit of advice for beginner climber

Personally i prefered a spliced split tale rather than a sewn one. Another personal thing is i like my karabiners different colours, blue for my lanyard black for climbing line and split tale. I also like my split tale a different colour to my main line. All things that i like but i've stuck with it over the years and when other new climbers have seen it they like the colour co-ordination.

As for a lanyard you can't go wrong with a 5m length of XTC+. Works well as a short climbing line and for work posistioning. I've had a prussic on it but now i use a VT.

Make your own prussics up I like 10mm regate prussic rope

Seems like a good starting kit, peteCC. I wouldn't look at things like hitch climbers and advanced systems until you get the basics right - so a good few prussiks and split tails are the better option. I think getting a side strop is a wise choice - just get a length of rope, 3m is appropriate, tie a prussik, add a krab on the one end and you're away to go.

Good luck with it all.

was thinking of the same thing that might start of with relatively cheap equipment and get more advanced gear as i go along :thumbup1:

also like the idea with different coloured karabiners

thanks for all the advice gents can't wait to place my order tomorrow

a good idea from others, try harnesess on, a good thing to start on is a fixed D harness, since you arent doing much you hsould start simple, a good one i have used is the Petzl navaho boss, nice comfy harness and has a full body harness optoin. Makes you feel very safe and also is good with the fixed D option.

i use a petzl sequoia and if anything its a bit advanced for my style of climbing, but i can work with it.

Low and slow, its all very well and good buying all the shiny stuff but if you dont climb properly with it its as good as a short prussik.

Start with the simple systems and get used to using them then look into the shiny kit and harness bling.

I climbed on a prussic loop for 18 months before advancing to the vt.

I still use a prussic loop for large trees when required to get out to the edges using the other end of climbing line.
