Hey folks, I’ve made a thing — canopyid.co.uk

Alright, so I’ve been a tree surgeon for over a decade, and like most of you, I’ve had people constantly asking “what tree is this?” and let’s be honest, sometimes I’m asking myself the same thing. So I decided to build something to help — CanopyID.

It’s a free little website I’ve put together that helps you learn to identify trees and test yourself. There's a quick training mode, a test mode with difficulty levels, and even a (currently disabled) leaderboard feature for those who want to prove they have the skills. More features like fungi ID and structured lessons are in the pipeline and i need to spend more time adding new photos of each species and adding more species to the database.

BUT… fair warning:
This is still very much in early beta, and I’m building it completely solo in my spare time. So expect bugs, broken bits, dodgy images, incorrect info, and occasional downtime. I'm new to all of this.

If you fancy giving it a try, I’d massively appreciate any feedback or suggestions. You can message me here or email me at [email protected].

Cheers,
Callum

Didn’t you post this same thing under a different username a few months back?

I never posted anything, I just messaged you in march asking if it was okay to post, you said it was okay. This is my first post.

Bold move in this age of photo recognition on iPhones.

Good luck anyway.

Thanks! It's a personal project as I found that it looks unprofessional if a customer asks what a tree is and your team doesn't know.

You really made the Shazam of trees huh? Finally, no more awkwardly mumbling "uhh… it’s probably an oak" when I have no clue. Gonna bookmark this for my next smug countryside walk

Not quite, there are apps out there that are equivalent to that but i find their success rate iffy. This is more for new tree surgeons (or old that want to improve their ID of trees). Its kind of a fancy flash card system where it shows you tree pictures, names and info and then tries to get you to remember it so that you can recognise the trees on your own.
I worked with someone who called an ash a rowan and wanted an easier way for people to learn their ID if they dont like just pouring over books.
Again though this is very basic and in its infancy. Please let me know when it has issue or if i have got the tree id wrong on something!
