Its 7-8yrs old, not a lot of work done, 300tanks of fuel gone through it.  Most needy item I have ever come across in my life, carb seals, difficult to start, pull cords, difficult to tune the carb, its been back to the repair shop a few times.  Fine powerful machine however.  No advertisment for any brand, I wouldn't buy it again, I would buy a Japanese saw.

Japanese hedge trimmer and leaf blower here, much easier to start, never give any problems.

Nothing wrong with oiler or the oil, both are functioning perfectly.  the oil is leaking rather than going into the hole in the chainsaw bar.

I have marked up my photos with a red line.  To the left of the red line the plastic chainsaw body housing seems to have been eaten away by the chain somehow.

And Im looking for suggestions on how to repair.  Probably not the first to have this problem.

Looking at the condition of it, have you been rototorvating or cutting dirty wood without sharpening the saw chain?

If u have then the chances are you've warped the plastic engine housing and it won't oil properly. But mine wasn't as stained as that on the inside, mine did it after doing a stump and making sure it was uber sharp... Sold it on ebay

Better off buying a echo Cs 310,, got three years of pro use before it started sucking in air, stihl isn't what it used to be, but the still Ms 231 was a nice saw to do firewood with

have a look at my pics, somehow the chain has gotten in contact with the plastic housing on the saw and eaten a bit of it away, and as a result oil is leaking from the oil channel housing rather than going into the oil hole on the blade.

cut some dirty timber alright.

What was that CS 310 like to start

OK put another way, I've never seen internal casing look that bad in the way of staining, for a machine that hasn't been rotorvating, one of the biggest flaws with that 231 was plastic housing, tiny bit of warping can also cause lack of oiling..

You'll have to buy one and find out!

But that whole range 211,231, 250, 251 were dire built and not good with reliability... Think brummie car built by Germans

Something I have done is make a paper or cardboard copy of the bar, to help see what's going on, whether the holes line up and why its leaking.  Clean out all that oil first. You could try opening up the oil hole on the bar to persuade the oil to flow.

The whole white plastic clutch cover looks like it comes off with hex screws.  That will help you see underneath and whether the black oil line can be replaced

Photos

I took off chain and put on bar and started up without the chain.

Plenty oil coming from pump anyway.

Oil actually seems to be coming out of the spare adjuster hole that is unused.  That would be the big adjuster hole that allows the bar to be reversed.

On examination of the bar the lube hole and the mounting hole are linked via the slot the chain runs in.  Are they usually like that.  That would be the two holes in the photo attached

300 tanks of fuel is an awful lot for a lightweight domestic spec saw like an ms231. That's 15 years or so use for the average specified user cutting a few logs a couple of times a year for their wood burner
