Helps with roots under neighbours paving!

Hello, 

 Hoping somebody can help, we have a neighbour that has paving slabs coming up due to some strange alien looking roots as per photo below! They think they are coming from our tree/bush on other side of the fence but after digging down around roots of said tree they do not look like these strange roots. Can anybody advise what type of tree/plant these roots may be from or offer any assistance at all!

Looks like bamboo rhizomes to me. Dig them out and glyphosate any green bits that come up as the larger types are very invasive if I am correct.
