Poorly Walnut tree

Afternoon,

 

I’ve just bought a house surrounded by lots of trees, including a big old Walnut tree. Our surveyor did mention it may need inspection by an Arborist and upon further inspection (to my untrained eye) it doesn’t look in great health).

 

I rang the council as I believe this is protected by a TPO and they will likely

come and view it. It is leaning towards my neighbours house, and although it could probably still outlive me there’s always that risk it could fall in bad weather.

 

Can any experts on here provide any feedback please as I’m none-the-wiser when it comes to tree health other than common sense!

The council won't give you any advice.

 

Best advice is to get someone who is qualified and insured to inspect trees to look at it, and report - ideally not a tree surgeon who has a financial interest in doing work to the tree, so you can trust their advice. That way if your neighbours house is damaged you have not been negligent . You may also find in the fine print of your insurance policy that you should have any significant trees inspected.

 

You probably don't want a hole under the tree like that, but old trees are often hollow so may be fine. Can't tell from pictures.

Likewise get someone to inspect the tree, might be someone on here in your area who could do that - let us know where you are perhaps.

 

As for the council, regardless it would be handy to know which trees you have (if any) have a TPO so might be useful to talk to them anyway.

Thanks - I should have said I have already spoken to the council. They will want to see it in person and may recommend I get an Arborist to examine it. These are the pictures I sent to the council as requested.

 

I did also have a family member who is a tree surgeon take a look and his opinion was it needs to come down.

 

I’m based in the NW of Northern Ireland so probably not close to anyone here, but you never know!
