Interesting chain oil leak

Hey everyone. Had one of my mates over with his Sthil 018 as it wasn’t starting. Sorted that (carb kit) but noticed it was leaking chain from around the sprocket. Took a closer look and the sprocket has worn the plastic away and made a hole through to the oil pump.

 

Is there a fix for this other than replacing the case? What would cause this?

Probably the clutch bearing has worn badly and not been replaced. Repair - you could try a thorough degrease and apply an epoxy putty like Milliput or JB weld. Is the hole through to the tank or just inconsequential?

Ah Im with you. Id definitely try and glue that. Preparation is important, remove as much as possible, probably that brake band and the brake housing cover. Also Id try and clean from the oil tank side. Flush the oil tank out with solvent or petrol and then refill with solvent leaving the saw clutch side down to drip through the hole. Empty petrol, clean and dry for a few days.

 

Rough up the surrounding plastic with sandpaper to accept the epoxy.
