what does 'a competitive salary' translate to?  All the company requirements but no indication on what the chosen candidate will get in return?

It depends on the experience of the individual and what they can bring to the company.

A lot of our Clients don't tie themselves to a salary range as they want to find the right people and see how they can make it work for all involved rather than missing out on talented people who could bring a lot to the company and its future development.

Happy to have an initial chat with anyone who may be interested in the role or us as a company.  We work quite differently to a lot of recruitment consultancies and spend a lot of time talking.

The client will absolutely have a salary range by this stage as this would need to be agreed before going out to advert via recruiters. It's an absolute basic ask for potential candidates to know what they are getting in return for the demands of a company; it works both ways. I doubt many higher end consultants would be willing to go through the whole interview process before they know specifics on renumeration; so I'd hazard a guess and say you wont get many applicants.
