Smoke in the room, Stovax County 5 Wide

Recommended Posts

Have you got a flue damper? If you don't know what that is - it is a circular disk in the metal flue above the stove. You can't see the metal disk but the control handle will be sticking out of the flue see pic....if you have one, make sure the control handle is vertical before opening the door.

Other than that, you may need to open the damper below the stove (there is a slider damper under the entrance plate) and if that doesn't work, try opening all the front dampers and try that.

If it still smokes, your flue draw is probably not sufficient.

It is the air control that allows air to be introduced through the holes in the back plate. Pushed in is off, out is air allowed in so you need it out.

If it still smokes then the flue updraft is probably too low or possibly you may need to introduce air in to the room - try opening a window 5 mins before opening the door.

Primary air is for the wood itself, secondary air lets the fumes combust above and should be open at least a bit too. I don't think you can fully close either of these though. Airwash sends air over the glass to stop it getting so dirty.

-Edit, missed this bit-

So starting the fire, use primary air when you want the fire to be at the wood to get it going and then you want to burn the volatile combustibles - the secondary air and air wash do that. You can shut down the primary air then.

How much smoke comes into the room and what is your fire like? If mine is smouldering then sometimes smoke escapes. However if your flue is generally clear (not sure how much you use the stove) than I guess you burn it reasonably well. Does it do the same regardless of the fire size you have? Big fire or small fire?

It varies, sometimes you cant see any smoke but we see little bits of ash floating up out of the open door and it smells smokey. Most of the time the smoke is visible, and it is quite a lot and we just try and shut the door asap. We always are burning hot, about 200 degrees C. We refuel before the temeprature drops. The fire has plenty of flames and a good bed of red hot embers.
