Interesting tree with reddish streak running through it. ID?

Good afternoon,

 

Please can you tell me what tree this is?

 

I've attached several photos of the bark, leaves, and sawn sections. It's in Surrey, UK.

 

Interestingly, it has a very distinct “streak” running through it. The centre of the wood is a dark reddish colour and the outside is pale. This streak runs through the entire tree from the base to the branches.

 

I'm a woodworker and have made some cooking utensils from this wood. The main reason for IDing it is to rule out that the streaks are some sort of disease or infection. It needs to be “foodsafe” although in my understanding almost all good wood is. Please correct me if I'm wrong on that.

 

This wood is some of the most beautiful I have so would really appreciate an ID on it. Thank you.

Yes, Cherry.  The bark is a dead giveaway.  The light colour wood is sapwood, the dark wood is heartwood.  In other words the dark streak is simply the natural colour of the timber and not a fault at all.

 

 Some timbers are poisonous (eg yew) though I doubt it would really cause a major problem if used in a kitchen.  After all many household materials are poisonous if you ingest enough of them.

 

 The classic timbers for use in the kitchen are beech, sycamore, maple.  I know plenty of chopping boards etc made from oak and ash also.

I appreciate your insight on the heartwood streak. It comes up beautifully when finished with the two contrasting tones of wood.
