Broken yet another hedge cutter !

Very annoyingly Earlier today the new stihl  hl94 went the same way as the old  longreach  hedge cutter and the motor goes fine but wont engage with the cutters (and makes that odd sound like not right at all ) .it had the grease regularly topped up but I think it was likely overworked cutting stuff too big and gear box now duff ?

 

Last time with this problem I was told it would be expensive to fix so sold the old machine it as a non runner.

to top it off it wasnt  even on a  paid job as it was helping family for a few hours .really typical

Take the cutter attachment off, grip the shaft with a cloth and get someone else to rev the machine lightly. What you are doing is making sure the clutch and shaft are OK.

Common issues are the clutch shoes rusting and sticking shut....usually after rain and storage.

The shaft ends can wear but not very common.

Sometimes people don't mesh the shafts correctly on the Kombi units and sometimes the trimmer heads aren't pushed on fully.

Inspect the ends of the shaft to make sure they are still well formed and square.

The gearbox may have failed but they are usually pretty strong. You can put a flat head screwdriver in to where the square shaft would go and try turning the screwdriver to turn the trimmer so it operates slowly. Mind your fingers, the cutters can be damn sharp!!

Report back what you find.

should have Mentioned also it’s not the kombi model so not as easy to tinker with but it sounds as though the drive rod just spins round inside so maybe it is the shaft end which broke.

All I ever do is find where the shaft stops turning, if at all and once you find where the drive power ends...you see what is knackered.

From your description, if the shaft is turning with decent power and you can't stop it by gripping it with cloth, it will be either a worn shaft end (pretty rare) or the trimmer gearbox has gone and the screwdriver check should tell you this.....then it is a strip down if the gearbox has failed. Can't say they are easy to work on but you can fix them!

Is this the earlier trimmer head with an alloy body or the white and orange painted one that replaced it?

Ive not had it apart yet but since noticed though the adjustable head seems loose and grease nut seems to have came off when it broke which is a bit strange .at a guess it looks likely the gearing will need replacing

Hi I’m struggling with this a bit as not that mechanically minded .attempted at changing the above parts but the main bolt had snapped off right at the end so I have it all stripped down trying to access it but getting the gearbox apart isn’t very easy .are they even designed to come apart ?

You just remove the black plastic handle part that sits around the greasing point. Remove the insert with the small locking  screw and fit the new part as per the included instructions.

I don't think you need much more stripping than that. 

Make sure you fit the washers in the correct manner and don't over torque any of the parts.
