Cherry tree care

Hi, I have some concerns about the Cherry tree in my garden and I’m after some advice.

It has an opening on the side which has been growing fungus.

The tree looks healthy and is flowering lovely but this hollow opening is worrying me as the trunk inside seems a bit dry and a little bit brittle.

Its quite a big solid tree and not weakened in anyway.

There is one limb above showing signs of the bark pealing back but is flowering fine.

Any advice will be helpful on what I can do or treat it.

Thanks Lee

Hi Lee

That's a fungus called chicken of the woods (Laetiporus sulphureus) which causes an internal rot. fairly slow in my experience and if tree is healthy it can adapt. the union of the main branches is also of concern.

You could give it a tap with a rubber mallet to get an idea of how solid it is.

I'd suggest you get it looked at by a qualified local arboriculturalist

cheers

mike
