If you're not often in conifers or other pitchy/sappy trees I think a friction hitch with tender makes the best lanyard adjustment there is. Easy one handed adjustment in both directions.

 

 

Thats what I use on every tree every day. Never gets sappy.

but agrab offers great adjustibilty too

You can't let rope slide through a grab when you have your weight on your lanyard. You can with a friction hitch.

 

I used a Gibbs ascender for a few years and was quite happy with it. However, once I switched to a friction hitch there was no going back.
