I prefer maller trees with big $$$,Some big tree jobs are good for the soul but not for the pocket.

maybe you should try a more efficient system for the bigguns?:001_tt2:

I know what you mean though those four small jobs make far more than the one big job, but it never was ALL about the money, not for me anyway, i am glad to be doing the jobs i truly love to do.

otherwise getting out of bed everymorning would seem like drudgery:001_smile:

it depends what your motivation is, you guys are obviously still up for the challenge, the buzz and the glory. Good stuff, hold onto that as long as you can, my motivation now is being at home with my family, so a list of wee hit and run 10 foot conies and a hedge, money up front ticks my boxes. less is more for me, before i would fall into bed exausted and acheing, then crawl back into my balistics and head off before my head seemed to have hit the pillow. but now i keep my energy for playing with my kids and doing stuff for my family as a whole, you cant buy energy or new body parts so look after yourself and dont miss out on the little things too much, what you have to do is pick your motivation for the day, if it is a week of crap jobs, then tell yourself by the end of the week you can afford a new bit of kit, like this week i got a spiderjack, i have been doing firewood all week and deliveries, but when i came home today and saw i had a parcel from jonesie my spirirts lifted, so My eldest boy gave me a hand and we opened it up and he was playing with it in th eliving room, pretending to cut down trees, it was excellent, now i am looking forward to next week playing with it. Focus on the good things and that will get you through the boring stuff, and at least you have work, plenty out there dont.

Its funny, you say all that but i seem to have found my second, no third if not fourth wind, i kid you not since I opened the door to acadamia, fungi and various other sapects VTA etc i just cant stop, everydsy is like a new penny, and i look at my work and my trees in a whole new light.

this job will just never grow old for me, its way to big a subject to have run its course.

Arbor is my life

i think that as pro climbers we all love the big trees, its what sets us apart from the gardener with a chainsaw in his van who can knock a tree over and hope it goes where he wants it ( no offence to legit gardeners who are as specialised as us arbs at thier own thing ) on the other hand i do love planting, small tree work, stump grinding and all other arb related stuff as its my chosen profession. you have to take the rough with the smooth in this job and be glad you aint stuck in an office with all that heat, free tea and sexy chicks in office skirts. on a serious note though! i do know some guys who i sub in that only like big tree work and as a result i only get in for big tree work. the other guys i get in love it all and as a result get far more work from me. Big climbs are still the best though

i was lucky enough to be in a handfull of really good climbers round here and got a rep for big wood, some of the jobs I got thrown my way, best tree education and i will never forget that period between 20 to 30 years of age. it was MENTALIST! i just couldnt get enough of it, and I still love it now, but there just isnt the big tree stock there was 20 years ago. sad really, insurance/subsidance has a lot to do with that.

have to agree with you mate! big tree take downs are becoming a thing of the past! i spend most of my time now trying to convince clients to preserve the big old boys. love the idea of the degree you have how are you going about it as i probably only have 10 years left in me

Im doing mine online, it seems to make it a little harder as its not a perfect delivery system and you need OOODLES of discipline and motivation, but i am loving it and I am feeling a great deal of pride in my new found proffesionalism. it really does hone your game, and like you say, we all gotta stop climbing sometime.

i shall look into the online thing but as you say it will be hard getting motivated when you kick the boots and tousers of after another rainy day. anothre prob i have is being based in northern ireland any finals or things like that are usualy based across the pond which is the most expensive stretch of water in the world, when i was at merrist wood it cost me 250 quid to fly home for christmas!!!! Have you done the isa cert arb? studying for it now but seem to think its a bit simple and too american based

got into the degree on basis of prior lerning etc, no previous qualifications, cespt my nptc and VTA training.

though I did have to do a pre entry assignment.

you should be able to do these exams at work with your supervisor as witness. get onto myerscough online see what they can offer.

it is always worth trying to get into a higher level course thsn your entitled to, by having them asses your APL acredation of prior learning.

was no point me doing a basic tech cert and diploma was a no brainer too, apparently it was too much for people on line? so whats this degree im on all about then? if the diploma is too much to handle online?

i work for myself now, after years of seeing how not to do it in both the tree welfare standard not to mention the HS standards i had to work to, but now i have no funding for further education. it feels like i am now stuck in a world of self learned knowlage that i think is right but at the end of the day in some cases could mean life and death for clients. In some cases i just remove the tree as that is the final action my knowlage allows me to do but with further education the tree may have been preserved. its a pain in the butt that you can get funding for a degree in football but for inportant things there is no help
