Climbing Spikes

Hello

 

Im doing my CS38 at the end of june and have brought all of my gear needed apart from a pair of climbing spikes, im looking at getting some Arbortec Treehog TH1005 lightweight aluminium climbing spikes. Basically i just wondered if anyone else has used these and would say there a good beginners pair?

Yeah theyll do the job for you but are quite heavy in comparison to the carbon fibre spikes.

In time once your climbing regular get yourself good spikes.

Cant you hire the equipment for your cs38 course?

Yes i can hire them but as im looking into gettting into business with my brother i thought it would be a good idea to have my own pair for when i need them.

Know a lad with a pair and I've tried them, I don't rate them at all but for the price they're alright. If you're making a career of it you will spend a lot of time in them I would say borrow the ones at the training centre and try a couple of pairs then invest in ones which are comfy and will last you a career.

 

I have twisted shank titanium Buckinghams with the steel offset leather shin pad, I can spend all day in them and not notice, maybe for some the tree hogs are the same. It's what fits you that's important.

if i was to go out and buy a pair after trying them on what am i looking for in them? such as comfort and weight?

I'm not sure anybody could answer that, you need to climb in them IME. My mate climbs in straight steel Buckinghams with nearly shot leather pads and he loves them after ten minutes I feel crippled, he's the same in mine.

My first pair of spikes used to cripple me and I wore them for about 7 years. switching to geckos was one of the best things i ever did. Anything will do the job, but get the best you can. Spiking puts all sorts of unseen wear on your joints(knees and hips) so its worth investing in something that works best for you.

My first pair where the worst pair of Spurs ever made. The only ones you could get then, in the seventies, where forged Spurs made locally in Godalming with welded gaffs. I can't find any photos of them. Don't know if anybody has got any pictures.

 

They where a relief to get them off. Then came the adjustable Spurs with replacement gaffs. I finally finished off my climbing days with steel twisted shank Buckingham which then where a joy to use!

 

So a try a few pairs to find the best for you.
