Bracket on Oak

My colleague found this on an English Oak today and we are having trouble identifying it (no books consulted yet though)

 

It was attached to the trunk at about 3m above the ground, with the stipe on the top - so the flat side on the underneath.

 

Any ideas?

The stipe at the top is odd,

 

is it possible that it has been found in an attached but drooping state?

 

Initial thoughts would be around beefsteak, chicken or dryads saddle

 

 

Scale wise, is it an A3 clip board?

Hi Dave. Yes, that's an A3 clipboard. We both thought it odd that it drooped from where it was attached.

Looks like an old fruiting body of Ganoderma lucidum

Granted, the form is similar, but I think that's highly unlikely as this was found attached to the trunk at 3m height.

 

G. lucidum is found on buttress/roots
