Was browsing ebay couple of weeks back and a tirfor tu16 was on with a steel drum attached to it for the rope and after a couple of bids I won it for £82! My mate asked me the difference between the two when they both lift the same weight and I honestly couldn't think what it is! Anyone know??

Here's the winch, it's great having the drum on it to keep it all the excess wire nice and tidy and its alot easier to store and get out when needed!

The TU16 was the original model that has been around for at least 40 years, and the drum on the side was a optional extra. Tirfor then brought out the T508,516 and the 532 when the patent run out, because the Chinese started to copy them.

The TU range was regarded as better quality, with the only drawback was that 3 shear pins broke if you overloaded it, against 1 on the T516.

Sounds like a good buy with the drum and rope included

Yes that's correct, also there wasn't a drum attachment for T516. Remembering the technical details it had a SWL lift 1600kg or a pull of 2500kg.

The best machine was the T30 or T35, capacity of 5000kg lift. It didn't have any shear pins so you could abuse it with no affect to the machine! It was originally used by the Coal Board so there used to a few second hands floating about. One had an cast aluminium outer case and one a steel case, can't remember which model number the steel or aluminium was.
