How do?

I have a 3.5 tonne double drum winch with 10mm fiber core on one side and 8mm steel on the other.

I need to replace both wires as they are just getting past there best and i am updating everything on the winch itself.

My dilemma is that I need as much length as possible for skylinning(so thin mm rope) but I sometimes double the winch up to pull trees over and am worried that if I go for the smaller rope I might just snap it.

What's everyone's opinions and would you use fiber or steel?

steel.

I've had fiber cored steel before, it was meant to be 'safer' but what was happening was because it wasn't as rigid it crushed on the drum and then snapped.

I've not used plasma rope or any other synthetic ropes so can't comment on it.

I have had a 8mm fiber core on one side of mine, that has lasted reasonable well. Provided the wire spools onto the drum tight the crushing is kept to a minimum, not always easy.

I have possibly some first thinnings in a ridiculous steep valley coming up, and i am going to try joining the two lines with 100m of 12mm poly prop, as it is cheap and light for a simple push me pull me high lead.

I think if you go smaller than 8mm then you will have trouble with the line dropping off the pulleys or getting wrapped around the drum guard.

Thanks for the replys, I had it going today and it's still going well we pulled some decent size timber but had to double it up.

If am honest, I am thinking more 9mm steel, just for the strength and I should hopefully get 150m on.
