Probably been done before, but is proper granberg ripping chain streets ahead of re-profiled standard chain. I have filed my oregon chain to 10 degrees and find it gives a pretty good finish with low vibration. With crimbo just around the corner, I could request some from santa if it's worth it.

Morning all. Rather than starting a new thread, does anyone have any views on wood wizards comments above?

I am going to build a very small homemade Alaskan for my ms260 and I'm wondering whether to refile a spare chain to 10degrees or try to find a ripping chain? This is only a little experiment to see whether I use it much. I would then (if i think I'll get my money's worth) set myself up properly with a bigger saw, grandberg mill etc.

Granburg chain is very good but you will need the granburg sharpener to sharpen it.

see chainsawbar .com

You will indeed need the grinder. This is because making it involves grinding down the top plates to make the scoring cutters and the process often leaves them too hard to file. However, the grinder is very useful anyway as the key to good milling is that all teeth are identical in length and angle, which is virtually impossible to achieve by hand filing. This will make more difference than anything else as to whether milling is enjoyable or painful.

Is Granberg chain worth it? I think so, but the gain is not huge over standard ripping chain. If you are pushing the limits on cut width with saw size, or are contract milling and want to produce good yield, it really is worth it. For a few small back-garden logs, probably less so.
