We're missing each other's post Mr Bear. Pavement post was for the person who asked why they were felled.

The engineering solutions make some interesting reading- root shaving!

I'm still on the fence having followed this elsewhere, in that replacing 10% of the tree stock every ten years seems sensible (Sheffield haven't over recent decades), so even if they fell 20%, it's only catching up.

I somehow doubt that there will be many large species in the replanting mix though.

I agree. Urban forestry by numbers will only lead to a decline in the population distribution of the tree stock. Or in other words, fell anything over 20m and 40dbh and replant with lollipop trees.

It may seem like the council is taking a proactive approach to management, but I think that ultimately its the thin end of the wedge that will lead to a negative change on the amenity values around the city.

Shame really...

Essentially Amey have got the contract to look after all of the council's stock, and the bean counters have determined that it's far cheaper to chop a proportion of the mature trees down now (in 2016 money), than pay for their maintenance for the next 10-20 years.

Simple, ruthless, avaricious mathematics.

Page 8 of today's Sun there is about 1/2" column space saying that plans to fell about 60 Lime trees planted 1918 in honour of fallen World War one soldiers have been met with opposition. Bit late by the look of it.
