Silly idea?

Hi, was doin a little daydreaming today.

My main line of business is Groundworks contracting, and we do a lot of close board fencing.

Now I also have about 36 acres of woodland, a lot of which is Corsican pine.

I'm wondering weather there'd be any mileage in trying to mill our own timber to use for fencing, now I know we'll have to treat it but I'll sort that out sepperatly.

Also I have access to a really big kiln if needs be.

What's people's thoughts?

You will know whether you have enough of an existing market already so that's the first thing to consider, as there's no point making anything you can't shift.

 

Then I would say there's 2 factors to consider. Firstly, if you bought in the timber to make the fencing could you make a profit? Then if you figure out all of your costs to mill and factor in the cost of the time to do it have you increased this profit by an acceptable measure.

Would the opportunity to be able to say you used your own local lumber (sustainability etc etc) be a benefit to you in getting work?
