Thanks for all the advice. I found an old chain in a heap of bits and bobs, cleaned it up and gave it a go. Lovely smooth finish, so it was the new chain after all. I obviously made the schoolboy error of thinking that a new chain would be ready to go. I appreciate everyones comments and help.

Yes, It’s all bolted up properly and the bar is level. It’s an older model with a 20 hp v twin Briggs and Stratton, pull start

It isn’t pretty is it. I’m using an Oregon ripper chain, the box was damaged, so I don’t have the exact details. It came from Fuelwood, so is their standard chain for a Lucas. I’m based in Somerset.

I’ve levelled up the rails, so they’re parallel, I’ve also levelled up the bar as you said. I’ve tried the chain at different tensions, all with the same result. The bar doesn’t seem very worn, so I don’t think there’ll be movement in the groove.

Hello, I’m new to milling and have just got going with a second hand Lucas Mill 8/30. I’m having a problem with my slabbing attachment giving a rippled finish to the timber. I’m using a new ripping chain and am going as slow as possible with it, the bar hasn’t done a lot of work, so isn’t particularly worn and I’m using plenty of thin engine oil but still getting a lot of rippling. If anyone has any advice it would be much appreciated. Many thanks, Dave
