  1. I have a very old axe...the head is over 11 inches .....cutting edge 6 inches. Three feet in length and very heavy.......have lighter ones so over all these years have not used it much, it being more of a family heirloom. From the pictures.....it was made in Sheffield by Turton and sons ......the head electro boracic steel. Takes some swinging for any length of time.......I've now gone down the log splitter route but still at times use an axe. Not sure of age.......Turton set up the business in Sheffield 1824
  2. Need to explain....I post for my husband as using a computer is not something he finds particularly easy. I joined the forum on his behalf but we both enjoy being members....need probably to ask to change user name to H&J (Horace & Jean)
  3. Thanks for all the posts on elderberry wood. Woody Paul said used to split it for snare pegs. I use hazel for all my purse and long net pegs. When seasoned it is very hard and I cut it to a point on one end and place it in a fire to harden further. I feed elder, rowan and rose hip berries to the Siberian Bullfinches that I breed... helps to enhance the colour in the cock birds when moulting and use privet berries for the hens. From various posts on having elderberry in the house saying it could mean bad luck will have to think about that
  4. Could anyone advise please? If dried and mixed with other dead wood ....will elderberry burn on woodburning stove?
  5. The Zubat Silky saw and scabbard are very well made. Can buy replacement blades. Just the job for what I want it for. Thanks everyone for your input 🙂
  6. Decided on this Zubat Silky

    Mini Saws

Anyone used these mini chainsaws? Thought of buying a STIHL MINI CHAINSAW GT A 26..... or a Seesii Mini Chainsaw 8 INCH...... any thoughts or advice much appreciated)
  9. Thank you very much everyone for the information on Silky Saws......I shall look on line at the ones mentioned and post later which one I decide on.
  10. Could you please advise me......what type of Silky saw would be best to use as I have permission to saw some dead wood in a copse, but am not allowed to use a chainsaw in there because of health and safety rules. Couldn't use a bow saw as a lot of branches and wood on top of each other, so thinking a Silky saw would be best to use to get in between the branches. Sizes to be cut..... from 3 to 6 inches then left with the trunk which I can cut with a bow saw once the branches are out of the way. (Thought of buying a STIHL mini chainsaw GT A 26..... or a Seesii Mini Chainsaw 8 INCH...... any thoughts or advice much appreciated)

Two chainsaws for sale described as new.........same price, £250.00 Stihl MS 251 16" bar Husqvarna 440 15" bar Think the Stihl would be a higher price new than the Husqvarna......but that aside would appreciate opinions on best choice to buy?
  12. Jean replying.....here are some of Wolfie 😍

    Chainsaw

I decided on the corded electric Huski 420EL with the 16" bar. Would using a 14" bar improve performance as is the case with petrol driven?
  16. Thanks to all who gave information and advice....much appreciated. I decided on the electric Huski 420EL with the 16" bar. If I replaced the bar with a 14" bar would it improve performance?
  17. Has anyone tried Rotatech chainsaw chains? A friend who uses them tells me they are good, anyone tried them? Also.....had chainsaws for a good number of years. Considering a cordless one for logging up on the garden etc. Stihl MSA 220 c or EGO CSI 400 E are ones I've been looking at ....... opinions would be very welcome.
