Wow…that seems very good! I could remove the wooden posts with nails no issue. The access is actually in front of the pile of wood you can reverse right up to it..

Have just bought some land with my dad which has had some trees cut down and left by previous owner. I would imagine there are 4/5 full loads of branches/logs needing chipping. Anyone local want to price it up with a view to an immediate start? Any advice how much I should be paying for a full load to be chipped and then disposed of? Would the below photo be deemed a full load? Too much? Not enough? Many many thanks in advance…Will 07394 189646

So, just an update guys. A vacancy has come up where I want to move to and work has agreed to let me take it so it looks like I can now move and keep my maintenance job. Happy days! On another good note, the company paid for all of the maintenance guys to do the PA1 and PA6 weedkilling course which I’ve just done and I’m very pleased to say I’ll be doing my cs30/31 at the end of the month. So it’s a win win as I get to keep my current job and I’m also adding new skills/tickets for the future. I think il get the stump grinder and chipper tickets in my own time and expense so that all I’m missing is the climbing which I doubt il do as I’m not too good with heights. Anyhow, thanks for all the previous advice, some really good replies and also a great forum which I enjoy coming to. Cheers all ??

I'd max out your premium bonds allowance. Rock solid safety and a chance of winning a big prize every month. Once this is filled up, I'd try and buy some land or yard which you can use now but can rent out upon retirement. If your lucky enough to have done this, you could then buy maybe a gold soveriegn every month for about £200 odd and then when you retire you can cash in your gold and hopefully it would have risen.

Work for a commercial landlord as a maintenace operative for the last 9 months, been very lucky in buying some property in the past which has done ok and will fund a decent home on the coast. Truth be told, won't find another job as relaxed as the one I'm in now with paye and an ok salary of £25k a year. Maybe I'm selling myself too short, just worried about starting over again. The wife is dead set on going, we live in south London which has gone to the pits unless your earning big bucks and can afford the nice house and lifestyle that goes with a large London salary. We've had an offer on a nice 4 bedroom detached home with 50ft wide by 100ft garden which we couldn't dream of in London. It's on a main road but only a 5 min walk to the beach. Lifestyle seems great for kids, beach life etc I'm just worried about getting another job or starting up on my own with no qualified skill set or experience. There's enough room at the side of the house to either have a big garage for machinery or I can gate the side off and have the machinery out the back of the house which as it has a large garden won't feel like it's full up with the machinery.

That would be brilliant. I didn't realise you were Kent based! (I presume anyway as your out in canterbury). Have a good one mate anyhow ??

Does anyone know if you can keep the chipper etc at home address or do the neighbours moan and say your running a business from home?

Your kit looks amazing. Thanks to all who have commented. I've took all the advice on board. I'm definitely not going to chuck a load of cash at this and hope for the best. I've only got one shot so I need to make sure what I do invest in works. I'm starting to think, get as many courses done as possible, speak to everyone I come across and learn as much as possible and then when and if the time is right, I would love to have a 3.5 tipper, heavy duty chipper, heavy duty stump grinder and any other "specialist plant". I don't want to buy the "run of the mill" kit as others have said theres plenty who have this already or can hire cheaply from hire shops. Maybe il look into offering a "services" business; Chipper and man, stump grinder, small tree felling, etc. It's a lot to think about. The landy cherry picker sounds a brilliant bit of kit. Any photos of it bud?

Any idea of brand/model so I can look into this a bit more? Are you saying these machines have so many varied uses that they could appeal to lots of different people/jobs? Cheers

Many thanks for your advice. I was looking to buy a large chipper as I'm the type of guy who is in for a penny in for a pound. I wouldn't want to do things by halfs. In fact, as another poster has commented about me being set on doing this, my mind isn't made up yet and I have no burning desire to become a man and chipper etc. My problem lies in that I've been pretty lucky so far in life and pretty much winged it through so far doing various jobs/business of which I can't transfer any skills or I am not qualified to do anything specific. What I do have is an ability to purchase equipment/plant/vehicle and apply myself 100 per cent. I'm a very determined person. I lack guidance as my dad is an asshole and I'm mid 30s moving out of London to the coast where jobs are hard to come by for the best of time. What can I offer? Well, my word is my bond and I don't mess people around so as well as being enthusiastic and being supremely reliable, I am not a piss taker in life and have great people skills. What I'm after is investing in machinery etc of which I can operate and earn a living. So rather than starting out again learning new skills from the bottom, I want to buy myself into a niche whereby if I have certain equipment/machinery etc then I will be in demand by default where some people have plenty of skills and dreams but for one reason or another can't get in a position where they can buy the tools they need to make them achieve their ambitions etc. Basically, I've not got the experience or will to start over again from the bottom and I'm looking for a way in which allows me to earn decent money but not have to train over a certain number of years etc..

Yes you are correct, the maths were just a very quick guesstimate. Not sure there would be a demand for my services 5 days a week, week in week out. I fully appreciate that. I'd be happy to earn £750 a week and have machines/van paid for over say 4 years. Lots of thinking to do..

Nptc Certs, I'm going to have these done at the same time as I do my chainsaw and small felling course. £250 a day would be fine with me I think... 25k van 15k chipper =£40k investment £40k divided by 4 years = £10k a year £10k a year divided by 52 weeks= £192 week £192 a week divided by 5 days= £38.50 a day £250 day rate minus £38.50 machine cost = £211 clear £211 x 5 days= £1057 per week minus tax i know ive not included fuel or insurance above but it's just a rough guesstimate. I'm probably way out though...oh and in 4 years when the van and chipper has been paid for they still have a value which if you sold them at 4 years old you could start again with a new truck and chipper..

Thanks for the reply mark. I'm in Bromley, Kent at the moment but looking to relocate to Thanet. (Margate, ramsgate, Canterbury, Dover, deal). I've heard conflicting reports of man and chippers charging £260-£400 a day including dumping of one load. Really looking forward to replies from you guys who are on the ground so to speak...

Evening all, please go easy as I'm a first time poster! I am leaving my current job next year and relocating to the coast with no job. I'm in the fortunate position that I have some capital behind me to start a new business but I'm short on experience. I'm currently in property maintenace and I'm about to do the lantra chainsaw and felling small trees course. I have my own chainsaw that I've used to cut down trees on my own land and believe doing the course may benefit me in the future. I have my own chainsaw, brushcutter, hedge trimmer, blowers etc as I use them at home and work (bar the chainsaw, hence the course). My question to you all and please don't shout at me for being a ignorant sod or similar, but is their a living to be made from buying a newish 3.5t tipper, (transit etc) and a new chipper and making myself available as a man and chipper? I'm happy to invest money into equipment if their is a demand for the service and I can make back the equipment money say over 5 years and also earn a decent wage at the same time. Thinking along the lines of basically renting myself, van and chipper out on a daily basis to whoever requires a chipper/van. I should have my lantra cert by then for felling small trees and il do the chipper one as well. Am I doomed to fail? Not enough work out there? Not enough experience? Or am I on a different planet and it simply couldn't be that easy? Any feedback good or bad would be hugely appreciative, so thanks in advance. Cheers!
