We sell capstan winches and would be happy to help figure out what is going on.
As others have said make sure you have filled the drum with wraps.
But in my experience it is usually the rope that is at fault.
Please drop me an email with the make and model of winch and brand of rope and I will try and help:

It gets better. As a Talk Mobile customer I can now upgrade to Vodaphone and it will cost way less than the prices Vodaphone advertise.
Thanks all. Looks like I have a solution and it's not going to break the bank
Oh and only 1meg required for wi-fi calling apparently
Make sure you check with Vodafone that the phone / package will work with Wifi Calling. As far as I know being on the Vodafone network is not enough you have to buy the phone / package direct from Vodafone to get it to work.

Are you on Vodafone?
Then just get a phone that supports Wifi Calling........

Ok had the Echo out on demo for the last two days.
It is more solidly built than the Sthil but did not feel as quick.
It does the job but god its heavy after a few hours!!
Based on my aching arms I have started looking at the battery Husqvarna.
It is only 6.2 kg inc battery and has the motor at the saw head end so no drive shaft to fail.
But will it last a days work in the woods with no hope of charging?
They claim 1 battery = 1 fuel fill.
Based on that 3 batteries would get me through the day. But will it?

We need a telescopic polesaw for forestry work.
Choice seems to be Stihl, Husqvarna or Echo:
Petrol telescopic pole pruners | STIHL
Echo ppt-265es Long Reach Power Pruner
I used the Stihl HT 131 today and it worked well.
I have the Echo PPT-265ES on demo tomorrow.
Anyone used the Husqvarna?

I'm considering getting a portable capstan winch, have it down to either the Docma VF80 with a 2 stroke Solo engine or the Portable winch Co. PWC5000 with a 4 stroke Honda engine.
My head says PWC5000, my wallet says VF80, the PCW5000 costs about £350 more but doesn't come supplied with a rope, the VF80 comes with 100m of rope.
We sell the PCW5000 and really rate it.
I use one daily in my contracting business.
The accessories you can get for it are brilliant and make it very versatile.
I like the look of the VF80 but have not used one.
The PCW5000 is rated at 1000kg and the VF80 is rated at 815kg.

We have a number of contracts coming up and need some extra cutters who are based near Ruthin - North East Wales.
Must be self-employed and have own transport.
Must have recent felling tickets as this is a requirement of the contract – no exceptions.
Other tickets that would be useful – Windblow, strimmer / brush-cutter, pole-saw, first aid, tractor based winch / forwarding trailer.
If you will be available for work over the next nine months and think you have the right skills / experience then please email me your C.V:
Feel free to pm if you have any questions.

Good read of opinions on the kinetic here (need to translate it)
Kinetic 8T ny miniskotare | skogsforum.se
Big plus is standard crane is 4.7m opposed to alstors 3.5m and cheaper. Big drawback is can't drive it in reverse/loading position unlike alstor
I am not sure if the guys on the Swedish forum were discussing an earlier model but the current Kinetic 8x8 can be driven from the 'reverse' crane operation position by using controls on the spool block.

Love the last log on this one:
There is always room for one more!!

I have a pcw5000.
I bought it for a particular job, where it was put to work almost continuously for 4 weeks dragging bunches of rhody up a cliff to a landing area.
it performed well, although the drum and fairlead pulley and the metal rope guide wore quite badly during this time. (probably due to wet rope and gritty soil acting as an abrasive)
but they are easily replaceable.
since then its only been used occasionally - but its very handy.
I haven't used others but I would certainly recommend it.
it has limitations, but by doubling up the line with a pulley you can shift some large pieces.
The only thing I haven't got that I would like is the skidding cone, I think this would be a must id moving lots of straight timber through an area with obstacles such as stumps, trees, rocks etc.
The most used optional extra I have for it is the clamp for attaching/ ratcheting to tree stumps.
the engine will cut out if its not on a good level.
What rope are you running Dean O? I have been using my PCW5000 on all sorts of jobs for a couple of years and only have a small amount of wear. As you say the capstan is easy to replace but it sounds like you are generating too much friction?
-
Hi Lee
I sell the PCW5000 portable capstan and really rate it:
Portable Forestry Winch - PCW5000 - Treadlight Forestry
I use one in my low impact contracting business and it is great for moving timber, windblow, assisted felling etc.
50cc Honda 4 stroke and 1000kg pulling power.
One of the best things about it is the array of accessories you can get for it which make it really adaptable / versatile.
More info here:
I have not used the Docma winches but I have been in contact with the company and have been waiting for an excuse to bring a batch over from Italy:
Verricelli, verricelli forestali, verricelli a motore
Drop me a PM if you are interested in either the PCW5000 or one of the Docma winches and I can work out a really good deal for you.

The machines look great but the questions you need to answer:
Can you find enough work - year round to keep the machines busy?
Can you really shift 40 ton in a day. Every day?
Can someone else do the job cheaper with a bigger machine?
The problem I have found is that most woodland owners don't really care about the low impact benefits they simple want to know how quickly and how cheap can you do the job. If we can educate the owners then yes I think the small machines can be viable.
Riko UK have now started bringing in a mini forwarder which looks very capable.
If anyone is interested drop me a PM and I will get some specs and pricing.

So last week we installed a Tracker device on to a customers tractor and I though I would do a cost breakdown to show the costs and savings **:
The customer was VAT registered so I will leave out VAT for now.
They installed a Battery Powered Retrieve:
Battery Powered TRACKER Retrieve - Vehicle Tracking & Security Systems
The installation cost was £207.50
Plus they went for a 5 year subscription to the Tracker service:
The subscription cost was £265.83
So the total cost was £473.33.
We gave them our standard 'Arbtalk' 10% discount so the total cost was £426.00
Spread over the five years this is £85.20 a year.
But many insurance companies offer a discount on insurance premiums once a Tracker is installed. This customer was with the NFU who do a 12.5% discount.
The customers insurance was £450 a year and they saved £56.25 off their premium.
So over the five years they will save £281.25 in insurance and this brings the total cost down to £144.75 or £28.95 a year over the five years.
So less than £30 per year to give you a 95% chance of getting your machinery returned should it be stolen.
Tracker can be fitted to all kinds of machinery and plant: 4x4s, tractors, trailers, chippers, quad bikes etc.
If you are interested in getting Tracker fitted please drop me a PM.
** these figures are an example only and will vary depending on product chosen, subscription chosen, insurance company etc.

anyone fit larger wing mirrors to a 130 tipper?? we tow a tracked chipper about and i find the narrow mirrors a pain when reversing ,as soon as the trailer is kinked its hard to see whats going on.
thanks carl
We fit these to our defenders and they really help with reversing:
Defender XL Wing Mirror - Exterior Accessories - Products
Also you can get a 'Wolf' longer mirror arm which they fit on the Wolf land rovers to see around the spare wheel which is mounted on the side of the body. Again it gives better all round visibility.
I have the longer arms fitted to both sides of my tipper and then the bigger mirrors as a well.
Genuine ones are expensive:
RRC8443 - Wing Mirror Arm Defender Wolf
But there are alternatives:
Defender Mirror with Extended Wolf Type Arm - Paddock Spares

What do people think would make one of these demonstration events better?
Obviously the organising / advertising is important but what else would improve the experience.
I might be putting on something similar at some point and want to make it as interesting as possible.

Not mine. Just seen it on gumtree - looks awesome!!

Anyone give any updates on these trackers after a few months use? Need to buy a tracker of some sort for a new chipper so any current recommendations would be good...
Another option for you:
http://arbtalk.co.uk/forum/treadlight-forestry/96649-treadlight-forestry-now-tracker-dealer.html
95% of machines are returned to their owners. Most within 24 hours.
Drop me a PM if you want to learn more.
