  1. I find it hard to believe that weedkiller could kill a whole hedge. Firstly, it's my understanding that most of this stuff only really works on shallow rooted plants. Secondly, leylandii have a waxy-ish leaf making it hard for the weedkiller to be absorbed and a bit of drift is not going to lay waste to a whole hedge.

    I'd look into other things like spider mite etc.. Sounds to me like your client just wants someone to blame in the hope of getting a bit of compo

  2. from what i understand the contract is the email giving the order of requested items and my reply with the acceptance of the order.

    there is no mention of a deadline or date on the email he sent me requesting his order, it just says a set of 9 pins (to include a kingpin) and 6 balls in two different sizes...

     

    You say no written document needs to be drawn up, but had you drawn up a contract you wouldn't be writing this post. I feel for you mate, I really do, but in this day and age you need to cover your butt from every angle. Not really like your situation but I remember once I didn't put a payment remittance time period on my invoice to Jaguar/Volvo and it took me 6 MONTHS to get £500

  3. I dunno about this one. Bit of a grey area really. I think small claims will be futile. The guy asked you to make them, now he doesn't want them. Do you have any contractual agreement that has been signed or agreed to by the customer? If there is no contract for something like this then I don't reckon you've got a leg to stand on. I'd liken it to this; did you ever order a Dominos pizza to someone's house who you didn't like when you were kids? We did (horrible bastards, I know, I know). Do you think Dominos got paid? Nope. We ordered them, but the recipient didn't want them; what they going to do?

    I'd appeal to his better nature (if he's got one) and draw up a contract for future trades.

  4. Thanks to everyone who replied. It's now working. I cleaned the carb more thoroughly and changed the spark plug and it's going as good as ever..... As I did both things at the same time, I decided to put the old spark plug back; and guess what? It died! Was the spark plug after all?! Not sure why, but I could do it up with my fingers whereas the new one was a lot stiffer. Could this have lead to it losing compression or something if the seal wasn't great?

  5. The gauze strainer is in the top of the carb, sometimes it fills with fine woodchip and fuel/oil can dry in it and form a scum that blocks it.

     

    Sounds like the carb needs a strip, check and going over. Sometimes it needs just this, you find nothing but it sparks it in to working!

     

    Ok, cheers, I'll give it a more thorough strip and blast with the carb cleaner!

  6. Probably fuel related but worth checking compression as well.

     

    Check the gauze filter is clear.

     

    Thanks for the reply. Fuel related how? Because I left old in it? Compression seems solid; without the decomp it's a nightmare to try and pull over! How do I check compression though?

    Is the gauze filter in the carb?

  7. Forgot to say, once I'd cleaned it all, it fired through choke, semi choke and idle nicely. Have it some revs but about 30 secs in and it dies. After that it grumbles on the pull and the decomp valve pops out and that's about it!

    I have a 461 that gets used only every now and then.. So needed it yesterday and hadn't used it for about 2 months. I usually use motomix but had, on this occasion, left 2 stroke in it. Ditched the old and put in some fresh 2 stroke. Fired it up, cut through a log, happy days still sharp. Climbed back up the tree, started on my sink cut and it just died.. We couldn't get it restarted properly. It grumbles into life then dies. I've stripped it, cleaned the carb (didn't need it), air filter, contacts on ignition coil, spark plug, fuel filter, fuel pipe.. I'm out of ideas, the only thing left is to try a brand new spark plug.. Any other ideas? Thanks

  9. The few I've done, I've done lightly. Avoid early spring when saps rising and when it's losing leaf to avoid it pulling down any airborne pathogens as the sap retreats. But to be honest it depends on the customer; if they want it done sooner rather than later (even if it's against all advice) and you don't do it, someone else will.

  10. I often think when I read these threads "why don't you take it to the shop?"

     

     

    Because that costs money and time. It's a 2 week lead time at my local shop. Tool out of action for a while is not good for a small business. I fix everything myself as I can't afford the downtime. Forums like this are a great place for help.

  11. Repitition is definitely key with ID's. There is a shelf above my toilet and on it is a Collins tree book and the RHS encyclopaedia of plants: I read these when I'm taking a dump. No lie.

    Also walking around plant nurseries is really good for identifying stuff.
