  1. I've been a victim of theft. My saws, climbing gear etc. I want to kill the thieving scum. They are no different. BUT, what I do like to think about in this particular case is the meticulous planning, surveillance and attention to detail that must have happened in the run up to the job. It must have been something straight out of a film. As said before, if only this ingenuity could have gone into something constructive.

  2.

I think you're doing the right thing phoning round and, I would suggest, maybe offer them a day or two FREE so they can have a look at you, and, if your "real life" experience is limited perhaps saying you're happy to do whatever needs to be done rather than, for instance, I only want climbing jobs, i.e. be as versatile and flexible as you can to get a foot in the door...and, of course, be prepared to graft, ideally in all weathers, or at least as required.

    Don't offer

To work for free for anyone. That is just ridiculous. But start off as a

Groundy and work your way up

    Ooooooo, fight, fight, fight:lol:

  3. For PAYE, it depends what's in your contract. In our contract it states that during the winter if we can't work due to snow then we don't get paid. It's crap but we signed the contract. It's a relatively small firm with limited funds. If the company is not earning how can we expect him to pay us for not doing anything?

  4. Sheesh, that's expensive!!! Wouldn't mind having a read of it though! I wonder how people come to put such values on things like this? I would assume it's a very good book and that there aren't many around?

  5. The point with side attachment points is that they aren't rated in the event off a fall in the same way that a main attachment point is.

This doesn't mean the side "dee" rings would fail but it has a better chance of leaving you singing soprano

    Bingo

  6. No the 25m rope is my mainline connected to main bridge via prussik. I use the 3m flip line on side ds to secure when throwing mainline up to next branch. If I got a positioning rope lanyard instead of flip line would use this off side ds or anchor bridge?

Both, with the right setup. If you use a rope grab I don't think you'll be able to climb on it. By using a friction hitch with a pulley underneath you can do both.

  7. I'm mainly doing small medium tree works.

At the moment I have a 25m and 37m rope. With the 37m i use both ends of rope plus a 3m steel flip line when chogging down. The 25 used most often - smallish take downs/reductions. On small stuff i use the 25 and 3m steel flip line on side ds on willans harness. However I've recently heard you shouldn't hang off the side Ds? If I get a lanyard 5m positioning strop would this be used off the side Ds or main anchor bridge.

I climb with a 5m lanyard set up with a VT and use it on my main bridge, especially when installing. Once at my TIP I change it to my side d's for work positioning. Also change it back to my main bridge for difficult work positions. Really versatile.

I was taught never to hang from my side d's because, as mentioned before, you're side loading them with the potential to tear. They should only have lateral loading with your feet firmly placed. Buuutttt, I have hung from them before haha

  8. Books are always good to help with a basic knowledge of trees etc. I've found most of my knowledge has come from a book. If you have your own climbing kit you could always go recreational climbing to help you become a more proficient climber. On the job experience always counts for more but there are small things you can do to hone your skills. Also, if you've got nothing else on on a Saturday you could always offer up a days free labour to someone? Not ideal, but if you prove yourself it could potentially lead to a job

  9. Agree with the airstreams being cold, nonetheless have quite enjoyed wearing them. I have now just purchased the arbortec scafell xer.. On day one I wanted to cry, they felt like vices. After loosening the laces and wearing them even to the shops just to break them in, I am now very happy. They are awesome. Honestly. Pricey but awesome... So far! Only had them a week so who knows what the future holds!

  10. I'm looking to get an MS 661 and whilst looking on the interweb I noticed that the MS 880 with the same bar (30") is only £150 more. It's not often that I do massive trees and doubt I'd ever have the need to whack a 4ft bar on it, but when spending this much money an extra 150 isn't much. But if I did have it I would then future proof myself in case something like that did come up. I need to go into a shop and compare the 2 as I will have to take into consideration weight etc. It won't be an everyday saw (far from it) but what would you do in this situation?

Ps. Not interested in other brands equivalent.

  11. 3k net!

I'll never really know how it all went as I wasn't there to witness it.

I had 5 days on these stumps with a 4012 and the main contractor ragged them out and chipped them up in a morning.

    K'ching!

    Ty

Happy with that!! Wouldn't mind working for you around Xmas bonus time

  12. The advice from me.

Get a job, you will get one somehow, somewhere. Keep on for a while staying on the streets for the only reason to save up money, to rent cost to much, save up money to buy a flat. Do understand the value of money and save your money, Do tree work, drag branches, climb trees, go and work for some other place after a day time tree work. Perhaps washing dishes somewhere, if you smoke, then stop it, if you do drugs stop it, if you drink stop it. Put up a goal, lets say 50 thousand to start with. Sit down for a few days before you start and tell yourself the future you have now, and get things done, prepare your mind on working non stop and learn how to enjoy every second of it.. Do not buy expensive food, with that I mean don't buy ready made food. I was without food for 3 days once in my life due to I didn't have the money to buy it, and I would never accept food for free, I rather die. so I do know how it can be in life if you are caught off guard.

Main thing is put your mindset on the level needed to complete your mission.

Don't spend a single thought on the words, IF, BUT, MAYBE.

    Do it !

This is potentially lost in translation, but this is some crappy advice if you ask me.

Just save 50 large mate you can do it:confused1:

Don't forget though, never accept free food pal. You're better off dead:confused1:

Get yourself a £400 a week job mate, but stay on the streets in the cold because I don't think they ask for a fixed abode when making payments or getting a bank account or paying tax etc etc:confused1:

If you have quals in tree care cs30/31/38/39 etc perhaps let people know this with a sign or something whilst you're out selling the big issue. "Qualified tree surgeon looking for work" something along those lines maybe? You must have all sorts of people passing you in the street; it's bound to catch someone's eye.
