  1. I need a new saw. Got a perfectly good 039 Stihl but is a bit heavy for firewood unless its big stuff. Also got an 08s that's for the very big stuff and thus something a bit more handy would be nice. Just cleared out some old non working kit, a 254XP and a Stihl 181. The former was nice, the latter seemed feeble. What would people suggest? Not much to spend, say around 300 quid. Happy to deviate from the Husky/Stihl monopoly . Something like a Husky 435 might fit the bill but what else is out there? Echo, Dolmar? 15" ish bar to start with.
  2. Seems reasonable. As I said, just being nosey and have climbed and watched the inefficient techniques some climber use compared with the SRT that big pitch cavers use. Watched some one de limb a big Scots pine the other day and it seemed so slow to pull himself up uing the branch as the pulley. Ta
  3. Cheers. Must admit i would rather keep the older ones. 254 was always my fave. Point me to Spud please. Local mechanics haven,t filled me with confidence. Thanks people.
  4. First, I don't dangle from trees so am asking purely from a nosey point of view. Whilst I am sure there are other ways (SRT), why do many tree workers poke a rope over a limb then use that limb as the pulley and pull themselves up rather than fixing the rope at the ground and jugging up? Sorry climber /caver not cutter. Seems a lot of friction and rope wear as well as slow.
  5. Noooo. We need less regulation not more in our life. What we do need more of is people taking responsibility for what they buy not relying on laws that replace intelligence.
  6. All my saws are old hand me downs and none are reliable. Stihl 039, MS181 and 08s, Husky 254Xp and 65 and a Chinese thing that runs better than it should. Time to spend a few quid but funds are limited. Huskys seem to offer more than Stihl for the money but am I missing something good. Dolmar/Makita? Jonsereds? Plenty of choice near home. Something like a Husky 435 may do the job but maybe something a bit bigger. Firewood only , usually not much more than a foot of so and doubt its more than about 10/15 tons a year. The delivery of 2 foot oak last week is another issue. Hmmm So whats good value at the moment?
