We live on a wide beam boat. We spend £100-£200 a month on diesel for the central heating plus if we had to pay for logs about the same on logs/coal.
It's a constant battle to keep the damp out.

Just the clutch mate. The lads I did a day with today thought they had all sorts of bother but no just clutch.
-
All good and running now.clutch did the trick.
Ta very much.

Chain moves on tickover. Just bolting a new clutch in as I type.

Hi all,
does anyone know of any companys in the surrey area doing railway/tube work?
-
good test to find out, i have done this so many times, its that front handle on the stihl that does it.
i have seen this happen alot, but moslty on top handles. due to doing a cut and getting the saw down and away before it has dropped in revs, suppose it cant be helped if concentrating on the big lump you are about to drop.
think he means applying it at full revs rather than waiting for it to calm down.
lets face it the brake is there for the operators safety, its there to prevent injury not to be a neusance.
applying it at full revs should be on start up and test only, do it too often and it will break, its a safety feature to be able to apply at full revs and stop that chain quick, you wouldnt slam your car brakes on at 70 eevry time just because you can. so why do it to a saw.
if it works then use it, dont abuse it.
oh and i use it everytime i stop cutting. unless snedding up with saw on opposite side of timber. it doesnt take much to wait a secone for a saw to drop to apply it.
i agree with all of the above.
having fallen on a saw i am pleased that i have always clicked the break on.

just bought a pair of meindle wood walkers. £149.
comfy out of the box. last pair lasted five years, including climbing.
-
just started to design a knife to go on harneses ect. got a mate who can make damascus blades. i currently work in outdoor retail plus do moutainering and arb. i sell petzle blades which are junk, Buck are very nice but not what is needed. working on the blade shape at the moment , plus sorting handle shape.
-
Cheers mate.

you have got a friend for life with that. i got tennis elbow and ‘trigger finger’ back in ’09. still got it. and i have worked the last two years in retail, so no saws or other nasty vibrating machines. these days it only effects me in the cold and damp or when i have been at the climbing wall.

hi guys, does hempstead plant still exist?
tried calling them and cant get a person or an answer machine.http://arbtalk.co.uk/forum/images/smiliesmodern/confused1.gif

Merrist wood are charging me £750 for five days training, plus I then need to pay for the test , so add another £150.
I wouldn't mind but after working on the saws for 11 years I have to do the full course and can't do the cheeper refresher course.
Best part if of a months pay with my current job=(

thats a grivel monta rosa crampon, the state its in makes me feel a bit ill.
think i might need to polish my ice axe to stop the rocking.

So you mean that they were banned as a climbing helmet? I can't see why anyone would use the chin strap while working on the ground.
defo banned from up the tree.
Why not have strap done up on the ground? What If you fall and knock your helmet of then knock your head? One big construction site expected four point fixing helmets with straps done up at all times , so we ended up complying to those regs.
-
the elastic band strap for a start.
end of the day its just a plastic bucket not a proper multi layered helmet.

http://www.forestryjournal.co.uk/newsitefiles/eAWeb2013/Iss43/HeadsUp.pdf this might explain in better detail than I can.
thanks for that. makes sense. i figure if the saw is in my face i might have more to worrie about then a small amount of slow down on the chain.
my old firm only used petzle lids, we banned the husky ones as damned dangerous.
-
i looked at these in honey brothers the other day, but having been informed that some councils dont like climbing helmets on the ground on site i didnt buy. does anyone know if the stein has enough “peak” to conform to tight H & S?
-
Hi all, I am needing a new helmet. Having been away from the trade for a couple of years it seems the selection of head protection has widened a tad.
said helmet needs to be for ground use. My budget is around the £100 mark.
ideas please before I make the trip to my local arb emporium and get further confused by the salesman.
And please no one sudgest a nasty orange pee pot with a 'h' on the front.
Ta very much

I am just returning to the trade after two years as a house cat in retail.
One of the reasons i stopped doing arb was lack of tickets.
After ten years of running my own firm, winning contracts for the olympic park and the EA i was not quilified. my old city and guilds from back in the day was not good enough. So i said sod it .
Now i have just signed up to a five day course to get nptc 30/31.
Five days holiday gone plus £750 to learn stuff i have done since the ninetys.
But if i want work its the way to go. Sadly the arse wiping course was over subscribed.

I like the JetBoil, out of practicality. It heat water fast, it heats food fast, and the cylinders are available at any hardware store, so most of the time I'd give it top marks. But I love the Kelly kettle too, it's a Man Thing, scavenging for fuel, lighting fuel, PROPER FIRE, then boiling up your water in around 5 mins. So in my real world, it's the JetBoil, in my relaxed chilled out world it's the Kelly. I have both and the Jet wins most of the time.
totally agree, i carry both but often use the jet. just dont bother getting the more expensive ones, a lighter is always better in the long term.

My disco 2 has straight through stainless. Sounds lurvly and was a lot cheaper then a 'proper' exhaust . It might scare the peacocks though.
