1. Its a reasonably old house (50's)which had a new face of bricks on 3 of the 4 sides to match an extension. This was done around 15 years before we moved there. It should have cavity insulation behind the new bricks right? But the biggest wall is still the original brick with no cavity or insulation. Was thinking of getting someone to fit external insulation but was put off by the price. Could I do it myself? I've got access to scaffolding(qwickstage) which should come in handy. Is it really expensive? The rooms are 2.5 metres high. Cheers
2. Hi Jon. The lounge is around 5 x 10m. But the minimum area we would want heating with the burner is probably 4x that size. Cheers BigJ, will check it out. Wrsni, definitely liking the idea of 12kw burley, but not sure if it will be a massive improvement on the riva 66 A. Will do some more research. Cheers
3. Haha! You've reminded me to do the draft proofing, the front and back door are terrible! The isolation in the rest of the house is pretty good though. Yeah, looking at the Burley website, those burners look damn good!
4. Thanks for the advice. Yeah, I suppose we've been getting by, but it does stay quite cool upstairs still. Will look around a bit more to see if a smaller burner will be better. Cheers
5. Nice stove stephf. But I wouldn't trust my central heating system, its always has problems.
6. Yeah, I could probably install a new flue, etc if I had to. But really wanted to keep costs down, but if needs must.... Yes, Buying in lots of fuel is quite irritating indeed! Would be brilliant to heat my house with the free wood I've chopped down myself and not have to pay the rich energy companies. Will look at those thermal mass stoves. I was looking at those gasification boilers but they are way to expensive and seem like to much hassle to me! All I've come across which seems O.K to me is a firebelly fb3. 18kw output to room without the hassle/cost of boiler stoves etc.
7. Thanks Stubby. Yeah, I would go for a free standing burner. Any good ones around the 20kw output to room range?
8. Hi. We currently have a Stovax insert riva burner with fan which is nice but only outputs around 8kw. We are trying to heat the house solely with this and it manages O.K. when the temperature outside is above 5/6 degrees but any colder and it takes a couple of hours of full capacity burning to get the house bearable. The draw from the flue is excellent and can suck the flame straight up the chimney easily, so I'd assume it would handle a larger burner? We would like a modern style burner with a big viewing door that doesn't look too modern, if you know what I mean :-/ Are there any woodburners out there that are around 20kw+ without heat exchangers as I would like to keep it simple and only rely on the heat outputted from the burner directly to the open plan house? We would only want to spend 1500 max really. Thanks
9. Thanks. But I've got it sorted now.
10. Thanks will have another look.
11. HI. I've got an old efco 125 pruning saw and no oil is being supplied to the bar. So I presume the oiler is knackered. The oil hole seems clear. Is there anywhere where I can buy a new oil pump for it, or possibly repair it? I've had a look online and cant seem to find the part. Thanks
12. Would you be able to get it delivered 35 mins away? I'd pay(a little ) I guess you you want collection only though?
13.
Hi. Have you got any wood left? Wouldn't mind a couple of tons if that's ok? Cheers

14. Thanks guys. Never thought of cutting them up! Will give that a go.
15. Thanks. But at 50p each they seem quite expensive. Is that generally the going rate?
16. I am looking for some Trichocarpa and Gaver as I need them to be rust and canker resistant. I also need them to be super fast growing as I need to harvest them for unsplit logs in around 4 years. I've already ordered different trees including hornbeam birch etc. I'm only after around 100 cuttings at the moment. I've tried emailing the poplar tree company but I've had no reply in a week and are thinking they have stopped trading which is a shame as their cuttings where around 20p each! Any ideas where to get them from? Cheers Andy
17. I've only ordered 25 Populus robusta just to get the ball rolling, the nursery i'm buying from only had Robusta. But I've been looking to get some Gaver and Trichocarpa from somewhere else, which should be a better bet I think?
18. I've actually ordered a few poplar now. Worth a go I think. I like the sound of the growth rate and also the ease of taking cuttings. I know it will burn quickly but some say a harvest with decent(unsplit) logs should be achievable in 4 years! Plus it'll keep me fit going to the burner to add logs!!
19. Doesn't the wood burn too quickly, I've seen lots of websites saying poplar is best avoided, there's so many contradictions on the web its hard to know whats right.
20. Cheers. Give me plenty to research. I'm quite excited. LOL
21. Thanks. What about field maple? Sorry for all the questions! last one I promise!
22. I don't mind strimming the growth and have a mini Kubota tractor which I could borrow which is close by when needed. Would that be o.k? Any trees that would be ok in a semi shaded area for logs?
23. Thanks for the help guys. Looks like I need to be looking at some Alder. Thinking of trying 1.5m spacing as the best sunlight area is quite limited in size. Got lots of space in semi shade but that wouldn't really work for any trees would it?
24. Hi. Could anyone tell me if 1m spacing for willow and silver birch would be o.k? I'm planning on planting 700 trees with 20% to be harvested in 5/6 years time for firewood and pollarding them 600mm from the ground. I've heard silver birch has to be young when pollarded? Thanks
