  1. This is the idea of what i'm looking at.. THE LOG SPLITTER SCREW TYPE TRACTOR PTO KIT TIP - SUIT COMPACT TRACTOR BIT | eBay Should be able to get the step down in RPM and step up in torque by putting a small cog on the engine
  2. anyone got links or the right names for these and where i could get one? interested in the screw part or maybe a whole machine. if i can find somewhere that is the just component parts. i can fashion something together with an afternoon, some plate steel and a motor / engine... Cheers, Danny
  3. it if was straight up and down I would, but there are a fair few forks etc in it and want this stuff out the way to get the garden tidied
  4. Nails win! 3 trees in a row, all the bloody same! but at different heights..very strange
  5. Was going to hire a splitter to get through 4 cubes of Scots pine, but Akro have theirs out on hire just now. anyone within 30miles of Livingston have one they would hire out? or recommendations of somewhere else that i can hire from? cheers, Danny
  6. I called round a few places, including the ones above. ended up calling Makita and they gave me the details of Tool & Plant Hire & Repairs - Edinburgh | Tool & Plant Services They are about 20miles from me and have ordered that part i need. They will do mail order for £5 extra for the bits i needed Cheers, Danny
  7. Robert.S from here came and done the job today. He came highly recommended from a few users on here Couldn't recommend him enough, landed the first bang on, climbed the second to take some of the weight off the back and then landed that one bang on target as well. Then broke up some of the tree to make it easier for me to process in to firewood - which I hadn't asked for, but much appreciated! Efficient, tidy work, no drama, turned up when expected and at a price that I was happy to pay - couldn't ask for anything more. Would highly recommend Robert and will be in touch again if needing another job done. here is his site if someone else is looking - Arbscape - West Lothian Hard/Soft Landscaping and Tree Surgery Cheers, Danny
  8. Anyone know of somewhere that does mail order spares for Makita / Dolmar? just need a chain tensioner 'peg' cheers, Danny
  9. first time unsupervised. first couple of cuts were a bit rough, but once the pressure and tension was dealt with, straightforwards. cut in to chunk ready for putting an axe though for firewood logs
  10. Friend came round the other night and had a tinker...30min later...starts first time and no smoke! tune + clean = Job done! used it today and it is awesome! just need to get the part for the chain tensioner, any recommendations on stockists, google bring back random stuff?
  11. advert has been taken down, but here is the cached version WANTED person with own chainsaw to cut up some logs in Lincolnshire | Skills & Language Swap | Gumtree.com
  12. looks like i might be getting a refund after-all. Thanks for the advice, but if it is not the basics that need tweaked and sold to me in working order, I'm going to go for the refund.
  13. Ok, had a look tonight in a bit more detail. If I pick it up by the pull cord, first drop is instant. Second drop takes 4/5 seconds. Either another 5 seconds for the third drop, or just hangs. Is that good or bad? Took the spark plug out and it was black and glossy with fuel. Pulled the cord with the ply on the case, small blue spark. Look in the plug hole and the top of the cylinder looks like there are even circles decreasing in size, from the circumference of the cylinder to the centre. The chain tensioner is weird, well, to me The tensioner screw goes down in to the case and there is another running at 90degrees to it. When I turn the tensioner screw, 90 degree screw moves.... But I can't see how that would tension the chain? There is nothing moving, other than the two screws. The second screw just slots in to a plastic static clip that slots in to a grove in the case. I would have though something would have had to move along or off the second screw? Thoughts? Cheers Dan
  14. thank you. I'll take a look tonight. Might be potential for a refund... but if not, i'll need to get this bugger working Dan
  15. It's a Makita that that i have this is a bit dodgy. Either going to get that fixed or get something else. Danny
  16. Might be getting a refund on dodgy saw i bought, so might be back on the market for something under £200 I know £200 does not get me a new pro saw, but will it get anything decent? I'll only be "logging" about 10tonnes a year. here is a pic of the stuff i will be cutting - this is what it looks like before i've processed, so still needs a bit of work Opinions on what to get new Opinions on what to get second hand thanks!
  17. I took a punt on a DCS500 on a well known auction site... It's a bit of a pain in the backside to start, about 50+ pulls of the cord. I'm sweating buckets before i've even lifted it! Where to start with improving that? The chain tensioner screw just seems to spin, with nothing in the background happening - is that an easy fix? I've got the owners manual, but it doesn't go in to any detail about that part. If these are not DIY jobs, any recommendations for someone to take a look in west Lothian or in close proximity? Thanks Danny
  18. If I'm in the family part of the garden, I have a nice wall of green conifers and the only thing above that I can see is the tree tops. This back bit of garden is going to be fruit trees/veg patch/ chickens! You'll see there are lots of other pine to the left hand side, and some small hardwood trees - I have no intention of cutting those at all! If they fell, they would only dent a law. These two...would land on posabley 3 houses/out buildings. If they have TPO, I'll do what I can to preserve safely - and triple check insurance!
  19. My concern is that they took the wind this time... There is .5 acer exactly right of this picture of more pine. To the left of this 7 acers of pine and mixed hardwood. Bought the house because of all the greenery. Replacement trees will be planted, of the fruit giving variety. Dan
  20. This has opened a can of worms! This piece of land is my garden, deer park, Livingston. There were approximately 10 others trees just like this that were wind damaged 2/3 years ago, when it was those ridiculous winds. These two were the only two that never went sideways during that time, hence, they stayed. Previous owner dealt with that I can gaurantee you that I could get these done for free/cheap - that's not what I am looking for. Sorry if you lost the conversation trail. I am looking for someone with the skills and experience to do this, I can afford to pay for a decent job, I can't afford for some idiot to land them on the neighbours £20k solar panels or hot tub! Some of you may not like the fact this is open on a forum, but this tends to be the thing with open forums.... I've received some good avice over PM about these and associated costs and contact details of local recommended companies, which is more than I started off with and regard to TPO If people still sit at home with the yellow pages, calling random companies and waiting about for someone... Move on, there is technology to help these thing be easier for you. But thanks for sending me a PM on that ;-) I've now got 3 names that either come recommended or don't sound mental, worked out for me ok so far. If I hadn't asked how much, I could still be naive as to what others charge. From free to £300 a tree seems to be the theme, that's saved me waiting about for the Everest Wondows of the arb world to quote me £1000 because they have the best saw on the market and shiny sales broushers. Nice to see a lot of you passionate about me getting a decent job done. Thanks for looking out for me Dan
  21. I'm taking a punt that most of the local firms will be on here. Work smarter, not harder ;-)
