Anyone out there chipping brash for woodfuel? Is it for smaller boilers or power stations? Any figures available such as extraction costs, chipping costs and any profit to be made? Thanks in advance!

Was that from John Deere at Carlisle? I only use them if I'm really desperate, get most things from msa machine spares, keeps most common JD parts in stock and so much cheaper, Stephen there really goes out his way to help too, great to see someone take on the big boys. -
That 150 with valtra sat up here in scotland for at least a year id say at a dealer, it went out a few times but never lasted long because of electrical problems, crane apparently controlled itself, perhaps great if it did as you wished and safely. Miss my 8400 with botex 560, great versatile machine

If you're going for a magnum then Deffinately go for the 310, the bigger 335 had rubbish front suspension, clutch pack problems and gearbox constantly breaths oil. Pretty bullet proof big tractors just make sure the front axle has been well greased and that it has the modification strips of rubber along the side of the engine and you'll be on a winner, great pulling, one of the comfiest on the road and excellent hydraulics.

I could Deffinately sort something out yes, I cover all of Aberdeenshire but am based at Peterhead, waiting for confirmation of a big windblow job coming off in the next few months which would be ideal for processing and relatively dry. I have 8 or 16 ton tractor trailers to deliver with or could arrange a local haulier. For a 26ish ton artic load to Aberdeen would be £30 a ton, after that I'm unsure how much it would be. We also do kiln dried firewood, don't know how much you could sell this for up your way but maybe another solution with minimal work and a quality product, having the kiln dried stuff down here is Deffinately winning over the competition. </p>

<p>would you be able/interested to supply whole logs for firewood processing if so what kind of quantity at any one time, rough price and where abouts in Aberdeenshire are you.</p>
<p>If I could find a way to get them to Aberdeen to the streamline shipping company then I could work out how much delivery would be to see if viable.</p>

Any idea on the price/ availability of chip/firewood logs up that way, I'm a harvesting contractor in Aberdeenshire and have a fairly ready supply but would it be viable putting a few loads on the boat from Aberdeen?? Interesting to know

Currently looking into enclosing the back of the kiln and hopefully the fans will draw in warm air from the pipes, also what are you burning?

We have the glenfarrow 175 set up but really struggling to reach optimum heat in the kiln due to freezing weather conditions, filling the burner 3 times a day to keep temperature just at mid 70's as opposed to mid 80's a month or so ago. Deffinately worth while doing all your kiln drying in the summer time.

But I know of 6 glen farrows all within a 15 mile radius of ourselves all going great and bringing great RHI returns, it only needs to pass the emission rules present at the time of commissioning, then its all set for 20 years?

Arb waste is surely the same as logs, it's part of the tree, it's otherwise left on the ground to rot away, why not utilise this waste of material as fuel, in actual fact, brash wood is more of a biomass than the logs themselves, if this doesn't happen then too much good quality logs suitable for the mills will get burnt, in turn sending timber prices through the roof, i have a harvesting business and see it already, majority of work just now is clear felling areas of perfectly good timber, chipping the whole lot and burning it

Haven't had a full count up but the boiler was around 15k, 6000 litre tank (insulated and covered ourselves) around 1500 and pipe work, meters etc around 6k maybe. Far cheaper than any chip or pellet boiler and not restricted to expensive fuel, don't know about other ares but in Aberdeenshire, dry woodchip is £100 a ton, pellets around £170. Pallets, tree roots and brash etc make excellent and free fuel. Yes it has to be manually loaded each day but the savings more than make up for this. Also I don't know how well the more conplicated chip and pellet boilers will work in 20 years time?
