  1. Its not under warranty, I got it second hand 6 months or so back and it's a 2013 model. It's been a cracking machine otherwise.

The machine runs ok but yesterday I noticed the leak (not to bad) then today I started her up to see if the oil was that milky colour and it pissed out of the filler cap after 20 seconds of running idle, only had it running 30 seconds and there was at least 3 litres of oil/water that pored out.

I've got no idea how the water got in and have checked the hoses and seals and they all look fine. So it's either the pump like redwood said or possible the filler cap.

What I don't want to do is get it all running again and find out the water got in some place else as I only have a week to get it sorted.

Didn't they give you a years warranty when you bought the machine? I bought a 2013 machine off them and had a years warranty.

  2. I'm storing logs in vented bags at the moment but I'm thinking of trying out ibc cages instead. There's quite a few dotted around the farm already and as I'm not buying bags in big quantities the price isn't massively different between the two ( roughly double I guess) but I figure they'll last a lot longer than the bags.

I was just wondering how people get the logs out of the cages without smashing them up. There's a good size merlo at the yard which I have access to. Easy with the bags as they have tipping loops, do you do the same with the cages?

  3. Had the new Thor magik out on site yesterday.

First impressions are very good! Had some horrible knotty plum wood that had been undercover for about 8 months, a load of old hornbeam that had been hanging around for 6 months and a large pear tree to split that we felled on Friday. It coped really well with everything, nothing it wouldn't split and I was impressed with its speed.

Table is a good height but the foot pedal seemed quite slow, will have to have a look at that next week.

One thing I was worried about was it's weight and how portable it would be. It is a bit of a lump and it definitely needed two to get it onto the plant trailer, I wouldn't fancy trying to wheel it onto the tipping trailer which is why I'm definitely getting a little boat winch to help matters.

  4. Good man. Did you get any extra's? Table, 4 way head, etc.

I ordered the table with the foot pedal but didn't bother with the four way head. I figured most of my stuff is notty or big rings so didn't really need it. Will see how it goes though. Looking forward to getting my hands on it.

  5. I've got the Thor magic 13ton petrol powered version and I am pretty impressed with it very fast splitter I find if you run it at full throttle its too fast its quite a complicated design on the valve block and controls but it works very well if you do buy it get somebody to make up the extension table as its £500 quid on its own

Cheers for the reply. How do you find the weight of it for moving it about? Do you think two people could wheel onto a tipping trailer?

  6. Got some prices on the two splitters today. I'm in quite a good area really, spectrum (balfor dealer) are an hour away joe turner (Thor) are about 20 mins away and fuelwood are an hour away. Kinda swaying towards the Thor, based solely on the YouTube vids and people's recommendations. Only thing I worry about is the portability of the bigger machines e.g. magik and balfor pro k. Both over 250kg I think.

  7. Brilliant bit of kit. Had mine for about 5/6years ish. I've gone through trapeze's like they're going out of fashion though. D shackle attached to throw line now. Beats paying £35 each time.

Mate of mine had a pulley saver and another couple have made their own, the rope guide retrieves better because of that metal eye. Just make sure you have a fairly straight rope path when retrieving. Also, be aware of tight forks in limes, hornbeam etc.

  8. I've had a little look at old posts about the above splitters. I was just wondering if anyone had any more thoughts or experiences on the brands? I'm after a petrol log splitter that is able to be moved around the yard and put on a trailer. I was looking at the balfor a12 vario and Thor mignon 11ton. But then I saw the Thor magik 13 ton and balfor pro (I think) 13ton models and they look pretty meaty and capable. It'll be splitting Arb waste of varying size and species. Any other recommendations? Cheers.

  9. Best place to use is Ridgeway Composting on the Ridgeway in Enfield. About a 15-20 min drive from Borehamwood. They charge £36 per load but you have to separate logs and chip

    Hope it helps

Great, thanks nick, will factor it in to the price.👍
