  1. Really appreciate all the help and explanations. I'm learning a lot!
  2. softbankhawks said a class 1 double braid splice, just wanted to check I understood correctly. Thanks for the explanation
  3. Will definitely get some false crotch/split tails and pulleys, too. Also looking at a Portawrap. It really is confusing trying to figure these ropes out: 16 plait,, 32 plait, single braid, double braid, Portland braid What does it all mean??? Just to confirm, the Teufelberger Sirius is a double braid and I could splice like this? [ame] [/ame] Not meaning to sound like a dummy! Just got a lot to learn.
  4. Nice one, just slowly working my way through the various threads on splicing! Thanks
  5. Thanks for the replies and the links, much appreciated. I thought it had been outcast as the arb suppliers I was looking at don't stock it. I have been looking through the "splicing" threads, seems I have a lot to learn!! Looking at all the "new" does ropes seems really confusing. Climbing: I think I will get the XTC Fire for climbing on (my old red XTC was bullet proof). Lowering: Would I be able to splice something like this?: Teufelberger Sirius Rigging Rope Thanks once again
  6. First, I must say I've been out the game a while, so I'm slowly working my way through this site and browsing old arb suppliers and their websites trying to update my knowledge. I won't be climbing on any 3 strand, but I did always love the versatility of the stuff, climbing (if needed), lowering, strops, tying down loads etc. I sat at home many a night making strops from the stuff. I can't see any advertised (climbing or lowering) and wondered if it is still possible to buy the stuff???
  7. I have been looking at a Honey Brothers and can't see any 3 strand nylon for sale as a climbing rope or bull rope. I did a search but my search fu is weak today. Is it still possible to buy the old 3 strand nylon?
  8. I climbed many a tree on a prussik and old 3 strand nylon but upgraded to the blake hitch on a split tail with a yale xtc rope...seemed revolutionary at the time!!! I felt all modern.
  9. Thanks for the welcome folks. King of the ring: no prison story there I'm afraid. It's sumo wrestling for tree surgeons! Good fun and a way to settle minor disputes in a friendly way In regards to teaching, to cut a long story short, I teach in further education and there just isn't any full-time jobs (a sad and unfortunate story at the moment in every sector). This forum is a great source of information, there was nothing like this when I started. Thanks again.
  10. Just found the board and would like to say hello If this is in the wrong section, then MODs please move it. I started working as a tree surgeon 14 years ago. I then gave it up to become a teacher and have been living abroad for the last few years. Unfortunately, due to some ill health in my family, I will be returning to the UK to help with things. Looks like I will be doing some tree work to keep me ticking over. Things have certainly changed a lot since I got my certificates and the gear seems very flash now. Just thought I would give a quick intro and hopefully learn from this forum.
