  1. Years back I turned up to look at a big-ish Leylandii takedown.

I quoted £350 and the woman seemed pretty happy.

As we were leaving the garden she asked if I would be paying cash?:confused1:

Turned out when she had asked 'how much?' she thought I was offering to pay her to take her valuable tree down.

'I know how much firewood is worth, blah blah blah'.

I walked away a bit bewildered, and even wished her luck with getting a good price.

Glad I hadn't driven far to price that one!

Fortunately this was realised before doing the job!

  2. As has been said, first thinnings is hard graft, but if this is what you want to do, stick at it and you will naturally get quicker and find little ways of making the job easier. Sometimes pays to give a lad a few quid to stack logs for you (alot of school leavers this time of year). In the 'clark's' catalogue there is a tool called 'tree pusher jack', looks like a nifty bit of kit. might work for you!

  3. We are getting married next week(!!!) and need 3-4cm diameter / 3.5m length branches for constructing a rectangular wood arbour. We had contacted a tree surgeon who unfortunately couldn't help us, but suggested we post a plea on this forum! If anyone can help in the Devon area, we'd be most grateful and can obviously pay for any branches offered, but any advice at all would be welcome. Thanks Dee & Dave

where abouts in devon do you need the branches?

  4. my brother bought a pair for climbing and said that they were really light and comfy to wear. Only thing was, was that they fell apart quickly. Don't seem up to the quality of their other chain saw boots.

A problem that I have had with some haix boots is I get small holes from wear at the bottom of the tongue which small bits of saw dust get in and cramp up the end of your feet which is really uncomfortable. you then have to take out the laces and scrape it all out which is quite awkward and a right pain.

I know of several others who have had this problem also.

Apart from that I cannot fault haix boots.

  5. i had a 7.5 ton one years ago and loved it. you could fill it right up and it would always tip. For such a large motor it felt quite small and easy to drive. The 7.5 ton ones are quite big for getting into driveways though. I got rid of it because of all the legislation that goes with 7.5 tonners.

  6. Basically I picked up a fairly straight clean looking 254xp from a farm sale a little while ago it starts but won't run seems to have plenty of compression and nothing obvious looks amiss it is it worth spending money on having it looked at by someone that knows more than I do (I only know basic day to day servicing) or are they not worth it as they don't seem to come up much on all the searches I have done. Your. Your views/opinions would be very welcome thanks

best mid range saw ever built imo:thumbup:

  7. That is one nice bit of kit you got yourself there Steve. I have always wanted a mog and have often thought of buying an ex utility one. I've never seen one with a crane attachment though. What height and reach does it have?

  8. The Jensen is a far better machine IMO. It has much bigger bearings and blades and you get 2 swipes with the blade on each rotation. I have owned a tw150 and have used the Jensen 530 contactor many times. You have also got a Jensen dealer (Redwood) just up the road from you who are very good. Worth speaking to them if you havn't already.

I currently have a very good tw150 but have looked at a nearly new jensen and thinking of trading it in. This is because of the 6x8 opening= less sneading. its still light enough to move about. I do mainly domestic and some larger contract work so have no real need in a larger machine but as i know my tw inside and out do i go into the unknown. I ve hired them in the past and have been very impressed and there alot of them about locally to me. Whats peoples views on this machine ie owning and maintaining.
