Thirty years ago on the estate I worked we had a 11ftx4ft metal tank which we had a fire below ground level to boil the creosote into the wood all was well till one idiot dropped a cage of stakes and cracked the tank then we had the fire brigade down to put it out.

My best ever chipper has been an Exenco gravity fed pto chipper on a david brown tractor witha bucket on the front for counter balance ~(it wheelies other wise) it was a fire and forget chipper no stress box, no snedding needed 14 dia hole on a 1 mtr square hopper you could somtimes throw wood from the tree into the hopper. we use to pick up log that take three men to carry and throw it in .. then try to stop it pulling it in to fast cause the clutch on the pto couldnt handle it darn it was the best ever chipper .
Unfortunately it was as dangerous as hell and if you wasnt privvy to its way you could get a nasty kick in the face and any risk assessment would of condemed it to the scrap heap about 5years before it had to
RIP Big Yellow you were the best!
1984 Welwyn, Hatfield council 8" direct feed Exenco pto chipper.

We had two chippers stolen a few years ago, they hot wired a tarmac lorry, they must have chained the chippers on as they were locked, took the first one, drove straight through the chainlink fence, back within 12 mins ( all caught on cctv) took the second one and the following day the lorry was found near a static gypsy camp.

While having lunch in a local park while crown lifting tree's for mower access, we noticed a large crow land in a tree in front of us it was looking at a pigeon nesting below it, the crow then worked it's way down to the pigeon, jumped on it causing it to fly away and took it's eggs, never seen that before.

The old Munch is 55 still climbing, still using ladders for access still loving it and going to continue for now.

I don't think it's to crucial as I have one closed in and one open front log shed and the wood seems to dry the same in both, the logs are stacked neatly on a pallet in both.

A McCulloch 10 10 automatic in the early seventies when they were quite good saw's and a little later a Stihl 032av, chainbrake optional extra.

55 still climbing finding a little harder now but still enjoy it, as the other threads say tree work can be hit or miss these days so if you can turn your hand to other jobs like fencing, grass cutting etc it would be handy.

Big quarry rocks are good too.
-
Used to drive them in my early days of starting in forestry in the 70s we had front radiator protector bars and sump guards fitted to them too.

One of our countryside land rovers they could not start it as we need key fobs on all our vehicles so they torched it instead, little darlings that they are.
