  1. Just a quick update on this, muldonach kindly sorted me out with a replacement carb for the saw and it now runs perfectly! Thanks to everyone who helped me with this!
  2. I don't know the correct H and L settings, however if you have a tachometer the user manual states that the idle speed is 2800rpm and the max speed at WOT is 13,000rpm plus or minus 500rpm. Heres the links to the user manual and the parts manual: http://www.efcopower.com/sites/default/files/156-165_USA_B_1.pdf http://www.efcopower.com/sites/default/files/156_IPL_0.pdf Hope this helps!
  3. I think £106 + VAT is out of the question, but thanks Gardenkit for taking the time to check for me! I had a look on the US ebay and there do seem to be some good deals - however last time I ordered a few small parts from the US I was stung by customs and had to pay VAT, import duties and a handling charge Mac, thanks for the offer! I'll PM you in a couple of weeks if I haven't sorted something out!
  4. Thanks Gardenkit, its a Tillotson HK29B
  5. I've got an old (but really nice condition) stihl 038av that I'm trying to get working. It doesn't idle or rev properly so I pressure tested the carb which revealed quiet a large air leak which I assume is the problem. The saw is fitted with a Tillotson HK carb and the leak is around the plastic spacer that contains the metering setup. A quick google shows that apparently with age the plastic metering spacer can warp and cause an air leak. So I guess the best thing to do is to fit a new carb, however it seems that they are quite hard to find for a reasonable price - a genuine replacement is around £80, which seems a lot! I've seen some aftermarket ones on ebay but are they any good and if they require a new carb kit are these available? If anyone could point me in the direction of a replacement carb or happens to have one that would be great! Oh and I'm also looking for a double port exhaust for the saw as fitted to the bigger 038 Magnum if anyone has one knocking around....
  6. Sounds like quiet a project you've got there - Good luck:thumbup: I've never personally run this saw, it was already messed up when I got it! I think the piston/cylinder failed due to the cylinder plating wearing thin and breaking down -probably just from wear and tear as the carb setting were richer the the default settings. However as you say the spark arrestor screen was slightly clogged (not 85% tough!) so that probably didn't help!
  7. I've bought several Oregon bars from 'Chainsawchains.eu', I paid via Paypal - alot safer than giving out any card details! I was really impressed with the service, they emailed when the orders had be sent out (next day) and the orders arrived very quickly - usually the day after being dispatched! So I'd recommend them - if in doubt about security of card details just sign up for a Paypal account!
  8. Had a feeling it shouldn't be 4 stroking - will lean it up a bit and then check the plug colour! Like you say Al despite it being quite old now I also think the BR400 is a nice machine - not sure I like the new styling of the stihl backpack blowers, they look less 'industrial'!
  9. Thanks for going to the effort of checking for me Gardenkit . Looks like i'll have to tune it by ear - I guess as it runs at lower rpm's to a saw that it is more tolerant to being 'near enough'???
  10. Just a quick question, I know its not strictly chainsaw related... Does anyone know the max RPM's of a Stihl BR400 backpack blower? I've currently got one running around 6200rpm - it's fourstroking a bit but it would be good to know if it can run any faster! Have looked in the user manual but doesn't seem to mention it
  11. No offence taken Should have said bombproof except the cylinder and piston!!! After some googling and as wyk has said it seems like this a reoccurring problem with these saws. Haven't decided if I'm going to get a replacement cylinder and piston yet, I've got 3 other saws needing repair so this will probably be put on hold for a while - or end up in the parts bin!
  12. Thanks Buzzsurgeon, thats really helpful! I'll check out the parts manual of the 242 as I'm after some other parts that may be similar!
  13. Hi everyone, been registered on the forum a while but this is my first post! Anyway I've just acquired a Husqvarna 444se saw - its old but bombproof compared with modern saws! The saw wasn't running so I did the usual checks and found it to be low on compression - only around 90psi! After stripping it down it seems that the plating has come off the inside of the cylinder and destroyed the piston, so basically the piston and cylinder need replacing. Now here comes the problem, it seems like most of the parts for this saw are no longer available. I've had no luck tracking down a cylinder and piston so I thought I'd ask on here if anyone could recommend replacements from another model of saw that might work on this one (or were I can source a direct replacement). Ideally it would be good to fit a slightly bigger bore cylinder and piston to give a bit more power! Thanks in advance, Will
