  1. The understructure is bronze. Huge discussions were held by the designers/creatives about the understructure during the project. Some (but not all) of the issues that had to be considered were strength, portability (the whole table is on retractable wheels and can be moved by two people), also very importantly the understructure should not take attention away from the top - the planks/top must be the stars! Bronze was chosen as in the historical context it is contemporaneous with the age of the timber.
  2. It's been a very long time......but I was privileged to be able to assist in the transportation and installation of the finished table in Ely Cathedral yesterday. In celebration of the Queens Jubilee the table will be unveiled by the Princess Royal on Tuesday 17th May and will be available for public viewing from the 18th May. The generosity of companies and individuals, working in a multitude of crafts, professions and disciplines both large and small has been overwhelming. Search "Fenland Black Oak Project" on your browser or, alternatively click on this Ely Standard link to view photos of the installation. https://www.elystandard.co.uk/lifestyle/heritage/table-made-from-fossilised-tree-arrives-in-ely-8951412 Photograph Credits: Terry Harris Thanks.
  3. I have large stihl mains electric. Used to cut logs in the evening under floodlight for “on the side” firewood business which had to be stopped as it got to big. Used freehand to ring up and also in portek for smaller stuff. No lack of power and vey well made. Only issue is that on some of the bigger saws they are soft start, meaning there is a very slight pause before reaching full revs. In a production type environment can drive you crazy as you are waiting for a fraction of a second before you can cut in anger. Many log businesses started on the Black and Decker 10inch from the early 80’s.......
  4. Quick Project Update (more details will follow) Tree has been Dendrochronogically dated as being 4,800 years old. Full details here. Planks are in a purpose made kiln. See photos here. Target is too unload the kiln mid June. Design process is currently underway with the Students of the Building Crafts College in Stratford playing a major role being mentored by a number of eminent British Furniture Designers. Table will be made at the Building Crafts College in Stratford. We are hoping to allow the public to view the table being made, but are now working through the HSE issues to try and make this a reality. Discussions are just kicking off with institutions who may wish to house the final piece and put it on public view. Confidential at present but we will share details as soon as possible. Through personal contacts we have been extremely fortunate to have a documentary maker filming the project and are in discussions with a production company on potentially putting something together to be shown on TV. Will update with fuller details in due course. Thanks for all your kind comments to date.
  5. Alec, Yes I am connected to the project. My sister is the "Adamson" of Adamson and Low. I assisted my brother in law Hamish in developing the project strategy and plan and getting the project off the ground. Unfortunately a family bereavement has taken me away from things over the last few weeks. We will slowly build up the website and Facebook pages with more info over the coming days and weeks. We have been working on this project for a number of months and what has been amazing and not really fully appreciated is the that all of the plant & equipment, products and services have been provided free and the fact that the finished table once made will be housed and gifted to an appropriate institution for the public to enjoy. We have found the support and generosity of individuals and companies overwhelming especially given the current economic climate. An amazingly generous award winning film maker is filming the project and we hope to produce a small film/documentary at some point. We need as much support, both real and moral, to make this happen so please spread the word. Thanks, Mark

  8. I spent a long time researching current availability of Logswift machines. They are no longer made. Speak to Johnsons of Cheadle 01538 756272 Home | Johnsons of Cheadle, Staffordshire, UK It would appear Johnsons were either the original fabricator of the machines or bought the original company out. Hope this helps.
  9. If anyone has one of these in the Southeast I am interested in hiring, either operated or machine only, to process quantity of clean small section softwood sawmill waste. Also for info, pictures of a new larger prototype TR110 have appeared on the manufacturers website.
  10. Bilke, Branch Logger or similar wanted to hire for 2-3 days with or without operator Kent/Sussex Border for processing of very small section, clean, sawmill offcuts. If you can help please PM. Thanks.
